El Nino may be most powerful on record, may tame Chicago's winter

El Nino is gathering strength in the Pacific Ocean and could become the most powerful on record -- and that could be good news for Chicagoans already bracing for winter.

A strong El Nino could mean above-average temperatures and below-normal precipitation from December through February. The last time it was this strong was during the winter of 1997-98, and that ended up being the seventh-warmest on record for Chicago, according to the National Weather Service.

I'm in no hurry to see the signs of the beginning of the end of our planet, but yeah, it could be a moderate winter.

God that would be nice after the past 2 winters

Agreed. But I'll believe it when I see it.

The Old Farmers Almanac has just released its winter weather predictions for 2016. (They are usually the most accurate).

Super cold & snow for most of the nation. Frigid weather in the Midwest (Chicago).
