The next HEARING in the continuing sage of the legal process for RYNE  Sanhamel, while allegedly driving drunk with an alleged Blood-Alcohol level of .127 allegedly drove into and allegedly killed cyclist Bobby Cann.

If you’re interested there’s also an automated system available that you can call to get updates on the court case info with regards to location, date and time. The number is 877-846-3445. Individuals calling this number can simply enter the offender's Identification Record number, which is 2208764 and receive court location, date and time. In addition, the automated system gives the option for individuals to enter their phone number to receive updated court information.

The petition to States Attorney Anita Alverez is still ongoing.  It’s worthwhile signing to keep the States Attorney aware that there still is a large public following, even though many of us are unable to attend the hearings or trial.  Every signature and comments are sent to the States Attorney. No harm is done if you sign the petition a second time.  In-person attendance is better, and still strongly encouraged if you are free.

Just to bump this up to the top of the list. Tomorrow's (Friday, 12/20) hearing is less than a week before Christmas.

I am a bit worried about the next hearing.   Its right before Christmas and it is important that a large turnout be present.   Defense lawyers like to try to get hearings right before Christmas as the perception is that the Judges tend to be far more "charitable" at the Holiday Season and are far more likely to "give a defendant a pass" or at least a less serious sentence.    If enough supporters of the victim are in the Court, the Judge is less likely to be "charitable".   The facts are pretty egregious in this matter, but if something "bad" (from our perspective) is going to happen, this is the hearing that presents the greatest chance for danger.

Just a quick up date from the 12/20 pre-trial hearing. 

There's not much to report, no real movement on anything. Both parties are in discovery phase and are coordinating the sharing of information as they do their investigations. Things will likely continue like this for several months.

Bobby was well represented by approximately 15 people.

A continuance was filed the next date which will be 1/27/14 at 10am in room 301.

This highly organized courtroom following of the San Hamel case is both impressive and laudable.  Thank you, Jason, for spearheading this--and thank all those who took the time to attend the court proceedings in a show of force.

Slightly off topic, but in a related tragedy: is there anything similar we can do to follow the Robert Vais case, in the recent death of Hector Avalos?  It seems to me that Vais, the accused killer, is very politically connected, as an executive in the Cook County health system.  His case demands an especially close watch, to make sure no judicial "favors" are called in.

Courtroom advocacy is coordinated through the district CAPS office within the district where the crash took place. Parties interested in becoming trained courtroom advocates should connect with that office and bring this case to their attention. Active Trans typically only becomes involved in response to a direct request from the family and after a conversation with them.

Hon. William H. Hooks  

I recently visited a good friend, a retired Cook County judge.  He served many years in the civil court downtown, He never worked in the criminal court at 26th and California.  I asked him if he knew of Judge Hooks.

He had met him once or twice, was acquainted with him but didn't know him well.  However, he know of the reputation he had.

Judge Hooks has a very good reputation for being fair, and patient, to both sides on an issue.  He strong point, for which he had a very good reputation, was his knowledge of the law.  He knew a lot of the law and if something came up that he wasn't familiar with he would research it before he came to court again or before he made a decision or ruling.

If you ever appear before him and some legal issue is important you'd better be very well prepared and know the law and how it's applied.  If the law isn't in your favor you'd better find a different argument.

What happened on the issue of his getting the car returned?  At one time he was asking for it, later he didn't seem to ask again.

Any report on the status? Did he get it back or is the District Attorney still holding it?  Did this issue come up again?
