The Chainlink

Older woman on the LFP wiped out in front of the parking lot for Castaways. No helmet and she appeared to be knocked unconscious after colliding with another bike. They have a ton of event vendors setup for the A&WS and it's mobbed over there, luckily tons of paramedics too. But damn, pretty scary...bad weekend to ride along the path. Makes me wonder how many Divvy-related accidents there will be this weekend.

It will never be a good time to ride the LFP until fall arrives.

This makes me wonder what the Divvy bikes will look like in 1 year, 5 years, 10 years? They're shiny and pretty now, but it will be interesting to see how the fleet is maintained in the years to come.

Have you visited other cities where bike share has been in place for a few years? It isn't always pretty. London's bikes, which look just like ours (I think they are the same manufacturer) are starting to show their (young) age. So are the docks and the 1-2-3 buttons on them. Paris' bikes, even older, are getting pretty bad as well. Lots of times I'd see a bike without a chain on it, or the brakes were broken. Right now it's safe to say I don't check each bike before I take it, but in the future it'll be more important to ensure it's in working order before taking it out the dock.

That's a bummer. Does anyone know how DC's bikes have fared? They have been around a few years (I think?).

Ouch, I hope she is alright!

That area is crazy busy on the weekends and one needs to be on top of their game to navigate it. Hope she is okay.

Yep.

I used Capital Bikeshare in May and the bikes seemed to be in fairly good shape. You could definitely tell they've been used for a few years, but in good working order. Whatever rubber material the grips are made of seemed to be peeling away, but all the mechanical aspects of the bikes were just fine.

I would hope that the Divvy folk will pull a large number of the Divvy Bikes off the street for the worst of the snow and ice season and only make a small number of the Divvy Bikes into "Winter Bikes".   We all do the same thing, why shouldn't Divvy..

I saw more Divvys out than I ever have before when I was riding on Saturday in Lincoln Park. It was exciting but - yes - scary. Hope the woman is OK.

So they removed all of the bikes in the winter? I hope that's not the case as Im sure that the dates would be somewhat arbitrary given Chicago weather. I would hope that they would just scale it down in the winter and not totally eliminate all the bikes.

In Minneapolis the bikes are removed for the winter & I'm guessing that is going to be the case here. I've sent an email into Divvy customer service & I asked about it through Facebook. I did this earlier today & will post their response.

My memory is that it is intended to be a year round program, so it will be interesting if they say otherwise.  And since there are really very few days in Chicago where it is extremely difficult to ride a bike, why shouldn't they just reduce the number of bikes on the street to reflect what will probably be decreased demand?
