The Chainlink

Traffic 'round these parts dropped off pretty dramatically a few weeks ago... hard to tell from the "I rode today" thread who's still riding, as one would have to conclude that Gene is the only one out there most days by reading it....

Who's sticking it out and plans to continue to ride pretty much every day regardless of weather?

Lisa, I believe that picture was taken in Stark county, but there are closer wind farms to Chicago.

Haven't been riding much lately due to work related travel, but rode in to work this morning. Wet streets, but no rain. Not bad....

I'm putting my kids through their second bike winter this year. They are 5 and 2. The 5 year old has just finally gotten the courage to ride on wet roadways so we'll see if I end up hauling her when it gets snowy along with her brother or not. We finally gave up our second car (to theivery) so this is pretty much our only option for the couple of miles to and from school every day.

I am thinking I will be wimpy and break out the goggles in the morning.  My eyes were cold on the way home. :-)

Smart! I love my goggles. It keeps a large part of your face covered.

Check out this site.

Aaargh!  Over dressed big-time.  It sounded so cold on the radio, but it wasn't and it was so pretty outside.

Yupe, I shed a couple of layers compared to yesterday's commute.

*** What was that bright thing over the lake? ***

My fingers almost froze Monday evening, riding home along the lakefront. I was wearing a pair of wool liner gloves inside leather like gloves. Gloves just don't work very well when the wind chill gets down to freezing. I'm thinking about upgrading to a pair of wool lined mittens.

I like your idea. You can get bar mitts, which have nothing to do with the Jewish coming of age ceremony. Some even have pockets for storing a warmer.

I rode in. First time I had to wear triple layers (base, base plus and wind jacket). Even my ski gloves could not keep my thumbs warm. I am in for a long winter at this rate.

In an odd tangent...anyone ever wish our handlebars were warmed? I know snowmobiles warm grips. Seems like if we could get warm bars and seats, life would be good. Power supply could come from a battery pack or from a dyno in the wheel hubs.

Just asking.

Wimpy? Anyone who rides in the winter deserves to have their picture on a Wheaties box. Winter riding separates the hard core from the dilettantes.

For yesterday and today my hands were pretty much okay with silk glove liners inside wool glove liners inside some big fuzzy mittens that I found at Costco a couple of weeks ago.  The mittens have a wool liner with a loose knit alpaca exterior.  The one thing about these is that they are not a good windbreaker.  I think on windy days I will put a plastic bag over the glove liners inside the mittens.

As to thumbs, I think the only solution would be the bar mitts.  The ones from Cabelas that Kevin C was talking about do not work for my bike set-up so I am sending them back.  The actual Bar Mitt brand looks like it might work, but those are about double the cost of the Cabela set that are actually marketed for snowmobiles.

BTW, who of our local bike shop folks actually stock the Bar Mitts?  I would like to take a look at them to see if they will work on my bike cause I figure I will still be riding when it gets COLD.  If I am going to spend that kind of money, I would just as soon support a LBS.

I rode today. I had to strip off my lobster mitts for gloves. I was almost over dressed with a showers pass jacket thermal shirt and my winter pants from swrve.

I would recomend the swrve winter pants there the best. Little price $$$ worth the money.

Lisa.
When i ordered my bar mitts they had me email a pic of my unusual handlebars and were offering a complete refund if it didn't work well for me. Of course i love them! Worth every penny
:)
