The Chainlink

I figured that I would start a thread to see if we could get some sort of chainlink group to ride together. My plan is to ride at a fairly casual pace and enjoy myself, so I'm looking for others to do the same. And, as many people know, the ride is much more enjoyable and goes by faster when you're in good company. I know I already asked James, but who else would be down for this? And, what time would you all plan on meeting?

I am going to do the full 100, starting at about 7:30, so if you see a fat guy in Half Acre kit, say hello

I'm not sure what I'll be wearing until the morning of.   It depends on the weather and what is clean...

I plan on being there at 6AM as well. I hope we can all meet @ 6 and be rolling by 6:30. Though if other Chainlink rides are of any indication, we may not roll till 8 or so, ha!

That sounds like at least 4 of us at 6 AM.

Nice meeting place, easy to find.  I'm the 6' 6" tall guy on the 25" Trek 7.3 FX, all black (bars, wheels, even the freakin' spokes), except for the Brooks saddle, with black pannier.

Attached is satellite overhead of Dawes, green arrow marks Dave's spot.

I'll be the guy in the white Argonne National Lab jersey, Trek Madone, hard to miss. Looking forward to meeting and riding with some of my Chainlink friends!

Nah, I'll take advantage of the free coffee at the sign-in. Still want the dehydrator?

Well, since technically you're on the way from the direction I'm coming, I can pick your lazy ass up. You want me to get you coffee again too?!

So, Mr. Kelt, when will we be headed out, and will you come get me and my lovely lady (she will be at the start and finish to cheer us on) or should we meet you at the park? There's a possibility that I may be field-testing a 2013 Fuji SST, so that someone at the shop has ridden one and can describe the ride. That would be so rad. I may also be on the Basso. Never know. Otherwise, I'll be on my trusty fixed gear.

Where is  good place to park my planet-destroying beast?  I'm bringing my wife and she isn't about to ride up there before the ride so I'll have to drive the two of us in the jalopy.

Here's a link to a site where the GPS files and pdf maps for all the rides are posted.  All the registered riders were supposed to get an e-mail with this link, but I haven't gotten the "official" version yet.  Some of the routes may not be final yet.  Cue sheets will apparently be available day of ride.

For those riding the 50 and 62 mile routes, they are virtually the same -- just a 12 mile jaunt through Lincolnshire added on at just short of the halfway point.  The earlybirds for those two routes could ride most of the way as a group on the way out.  Map image attached.

There is parking info on the NSC website. The locals are always concerned about a parking invastion and Evanston Bike Club has been responsive. We came up with a parking plan.

There is plenty of parking west of the park on the side streets.

Yeah, I just plan on parking in one of the garages since it'll be free on Sunday.

The garages it is for me then.

I was not braining earlier when I couldn't find the parking info.   I'll repost the stuff from the website here for anyone:

Evanston is easy to get to by car, but on street parking in the high-density residential area near Dawes Park is very hard to find.   Both Evanston City parking garages and the Northwestern University garage are located close to the start/finish line and parking is Free on Sundays.  Remember to take your bike OFF the roof before entering garage.

The parking garages are located at:

  • Northwestern University Parking Garage (3 blocks north of Start/Finish). Cars with roof-racks may park on the upper level.  Click for map.  (P1)
  • The Maple Avenue entrance of the new parking garage at 1800 Maple (1 block north of the Transportation Center's "L" / METRA stops on Maple at Clark St.).  Click for map.  (P2)
  • The parking garage on Chicago Ave. at 525 Church St.  Alternate entrance on Clark at 524 Clark Ave.  Click for map.  (P3)
  • The Sherman Plaza Self Park on Davis St. at Benson Ave.   Click for map.  (P4)

I'm familiar with the first 25 miles of the route, the rest will all be new territory for me.
