Savage Ride: a trans-Chicago bike trek with Nelson Algren Scholar Bill Savage

Recently Northwestern University English teacher Bill Savage, an authority on Chicago literature and history (and brother of the sex advice columnist), invited me to join him on the 25-mile bike commute he regularly does from his girlfriend's place on the Southwest Side to his home in Rogers Park, traversing the entire city diagonally.

Along the way he showed me a church dedicated to the English saint beheaded by Henry VIII, the neighborhood where Dr. King was felled by a brick while marching for fair housing, a monument to doomed Lithuanian-American aviators, a couple of iconic hotdog stands, and much, much more: http://gridchicago.com/2012/savage-ride-a-trans-chicago-bike-trek-w...

Keep moving forward,

He also bartends at Cunneen's tavern in Rogers Park on Thursday nights, so perhaps all that whiskey has an embalming effect. Biking doesn't hurt either.
