The Chainlink

So, it's no secret that people are not as gung-ho on RSVPing for things as they were when thechainlink was young and fresh-faced.  Still, considering positive RSVPs for our big swap topped 100 both of the previous years, it would be at least good to top that number maybe just as an omen of a successful year.

Can you help?

There is a public parking lot just off of Division on Bosworth Ave. It's metered but a few bucks will get you a few hours. Just sayin..

Please drop by the Bike Winter table in the afternoon between 1:30 & 5:00 and say hello. I don't want to be bored.

I'll be there!

Actually Mr. Snow you may have the cushiest volunteer gig of all-- you'll get to watch the presentations.

Still, I hope everyone makes the trip upstairs to visit Chainlink, Bike Winter, and Ride of Silence even if you can't stay for any of the info.

Whoohoo, h', that's great that I can view the proceedings on stage, I didn't know!  I was afraid the Bike Winter table would be in a corner of a drafty hallway facing a brick wall, or something equally grim.  You know, trying to replicate that bracing cold experience of the true Bike Winter rider.  Maybe I'll have to shovel in some outside snow around the table for proper effect.

You'll be happy to hear that the second floor has windows that open.

Those balaclava's will be very popular at our table.  Just sayin'.

If you've never been in the fieldhouse, it is probably worth $10 just to experience it. It is a really interesting old building.

I'm working the bike corral in the afternoon. Stop by and say hello!

I had a great time at the swap. Thanks to everyone!

Ditto, Mr. Mann.  (I hope you enjoyed riding your cool new bike home!  Wow, I'm jealous!)

Thanks to you, Just Will & h' for being such great table mates.  Thanks to everyone who stopped by the Chainlink and Bike Winter combined tables to say hi or buy something/donate to the cause.  A BIG thanks to the fellow who purchased the folding bike and bag we were hawking...er, suggesting to anyone who passed by.

Thanks to the guy from Caribou Coffee who kept us plied with tasty caffeinated beverages whenever our energy began to flag.

Thanks to Gin Kilgore and her panel on family bicycling; I enjoyed the discussion before my volunteer shift.  Thanks to the Racketeers for a breathtaking daredevil show on bikes--you ladies are amazing! Thanks to Martin H & Paul who gleefully snipped and cut their way through several cable locks and U-locks, graphically demonstrating just how easily it can be done; I'm sure more than a few people went rushing outside right after the demo to their cable-locked bikes with two newly purchased U-locks in hand.

Thanks to the many vendors and organizations who took the time to attend.  From the look of the many attendees holding new purchases, I think it was well worthwhile for everyone.

Finally, congrats to Christine Schwartzkopff and the other folks at Active Trans who had a huge role in putting this all together.

(And what a breathtakingly beautiful old building this was held in! Great location!)

Well done!  I had a great time and so many interesting conversations.  Thank you to everyone who helped make it possible.

Yes! Thank you! First to Howard K. and Kevin C. for their tireless efforts in organizing and then managing the presentations space. As well, and as always, thanks to Christine from Active Trans for another great swap!
A very special thanks to Howard, Kevin, Martin, Detective Girard from the Wilmette Police Department, Sergeant Sellers from the UIC Police Department, the presentation room volunteers and the many people that I spoke with while researching the subject of bike theft in Chicago. Finally, many thanks to all the people that attended the presentation!
