Now THAT'S how to park your bike after the blizzard....

We've all seen the depressing photos of bikes buried until the spring thaw. So let's brighten things up with a little levity and bike parking ingenuity. Especially cool, is the sight of the tops of the essentially useless-after-a-blizzard regular bike parking 'loops' (for want of a better word). As sighted outside 712 W Diversey today (02/10/11).

Oh yeah!  This reminds me of how I locked up my bike when I rode to a New Year's Eve party several years ago.

so with the low to upper 30's forecast for the next week, how long do you think it will take for those mounds to melt?

I did something like that at Trader Joes on Lincoln a couple of days after the storm. It was kind of nice to let the bike stand with out balancing it. Not having to bend over to lock up was a plus as well.

Speaking of after the blizzard- The Western Brown Line station had put all the excess snow on top of and against the bike racks in front of the station- and on top of any bicycles that may have been still locked to those racks. When I rode to the station this week, I went inside with my bike and locked up inside the gates of the station itself- they have bike racks located right by the turnstiles after you pay to get on the train.

I'm sorry, but I've seen bikes around town locked like that and I find it completely depressing that bike parking (and bikes in general) are being treated so dismissively by our city agencies.

I agree with you there- I was a bit mortified to see what may have been some decent bikes at one time, pretty much destroyed by the the snow packed against them and practically crushing them into the racks and under tons of the white stuff.  I only saw a wheel or handlebar sticking out of the snow pack in front of the station- it kind of gave me the impression that they do not like bicycle commuters to park there in winter.

I agree absolutely. I just thought it was amusing to see that this cyclist had gotten 'on top' of the situation.

If my bike had been buried like that, I'd be looking for legal redress from the CTA and/or the City of Chicago. Hey, I bet they never considered dumping excess snow on peoples' cars....
