Kona Prototype Band Wagon stolen from Rapid Transit Cycleshop

Be on the lookout in Humboldt Park for "Roberto" who never returned from a test ride with this bike:

2011 53cm Kona Band Wagon back:

serial # F1105C0310.

The bike is Chrome Silver with white accents - it says KONA on the down tube

I confronted him riding it in Humboldt Park this evening at about 9:15PM just south of the Tennis Courts by California Street.

I asked him to give it back or otherwise we would get him charged with a
felony. I tried to grab the bike, but wasn't going to fight him.

He took off north on Munoz Drive. He was wearing a black ball cap and a black shirt and had a small beard on the chin and a mustache.
Dark hair and eyes.

I don't know why but I have a feeling you're going to get this bike back . . .
Thanks Howard.

I think the kid who stole it might get wise and give it back.

sorry to read this nick. since I am nearby and in the park a lot...I will be on the lookout too.

Thanks Dan,

This kid was showing it off to some other hipster when I rolled up on him and took him by surprise. Too bad I didn't have any bear mace...

The bike is really shiny since it has a chrome finish. The geometry is beefy so don't mistake it for a Bianchi Pista.

You people give out test rides without taking credit cards or drivers license cards?
I think that cycle shops should take a photo of the person as well b4 aloowing a test ride. Then you could post the theif's face up here as well.

Thanks for all of the support everyone.

The Police have identified the perpetrator and he has a long rap sheet. I am waiting for more details.

He conned us with a fake ID. So we do need to up our security regarding test rides.

I think he has stolen other bikes before, so let's catch him and hand him over to the police.

The bike that was stolen was going to be displayed in the Chicago Bike Winter Art show as part of the Fashion show. This show benefits West Town Bikes. We are really hoping to get it back, because it is the only model in existance. The production model is different and currently not available.

Let's get this bike back and get the thief thrown in jail!

Thanks,

Nick
Keeping my eyes peeled.

Nick,
It seems to be the best course of action if one saw the bike would be to look up or have someone look up the police report number on the stolen bike registry and call 911 (not necessarily in that order). Initially I assumed you didn't want to involve police but this post suggests otherwise. Do you have a police report number? Would be happy to add it to the registry listing.
Otherwise it seems you're asking others to confront this person physically . . .?

I don't have the report number, but will get it today (my co-worker has this information). Unless you happen to be in a group of people, I wouldn't suggest attempting to take the bike back individually.

Good advice Howard!
