Leah's twitter says she'll post on here tonight about the incident. It's all hearsay at this point, but I heard the SUV driver lied and said she ran a red light when she didn't. I hope there's a witness out there that can help her out!
Please pass on our good thoughts!

Just sent the crash support info to her via twitter. Thank you, Ethan!!!

Healing thoughts to Miss Leah!

UGH this makes me so angry. Healing thoughts healing thoughts.
Quit talking about it on the internet if you want to actually do any good.
Thanks for all the support on Twitter to help me find witnesses. I have the driver's info, but am looking for the Good Samaritans who saw what happened and stayed on the scene.

The accident was at Halsted and Chicago. I have a police report and the driver was not issued a ticket at the scene.

I had a helmet on and was riding a 67 Schwinn Varsity. The bike is currently at Uptown Bikes, but the prognosis is bad. The fork is bent and so is the frame.

I'm heartbroken to lose this fall of biking - fractured ankle will keep me on the sidelines for awhile. Active Trans crash hot line has been super helpful... so we'll just see what happens.

Hello Chainlinkers!

Today I dropped by Lawyer Jim's office and signed the release papers. The insurance company offered a settlement in my crash case and we're just about wrapped up.

This is also the first day since the crash that I'm doing a full commute by bike without mixing in the Metra or CTA. Pretty stoked to be back on the road at pretty much 100%.

I almost freaked out before I looked at the date of the replies.  Phew.

Congrats, congrats on the settlement and your 100% commute!

Glad to see you're back in the saddle.

Awesome, Leah, congrats all around!

Best,

All of us at Active Trans, via Ethan Spotts

thanks guys!

The silver lining of the crash was all the great chicago cyclists I met because of it. I now volunteer for the Crash Hotline, go on group rides, met great people and have a lot of new friends. At some level, I'm a better cyclist for going through it.

The crash took me from being a solo-cyclist to part of the community. While I'd rather have not been hit at all, I'm grateful for the good things that came out of it.

Now that it is no longer evidence, I'll be stripping the Schwinn Varsity this weekend and downsizing to a two bike household.

I totally missed this the first time around.  That's what I get for being out of the country for a month.

Like Julie, I freaked out a little when I read this at first.   I"m glad you have healed up.  I shattered my Tib/fib from just below my knee all the way down to my ankle in '99 and it was pretty horrific as far as recovery was concerned.  I feel for anyone who suffers a lower leg injury in a motor-vehicle collision. Take care of that injury.  Hopefully you had good first-class PT/OT and were able to take advantage of the full program through the insurance payout.  I had to skimp :(

Sorry to hear about your bike.  Was it a classic Varsity or one of the modern ones?  If classic/vintage I'm sure someone over at bikeforums.net C&V, or even working bikes, could hook you up with a decent frameset in your size to put those parts on for low dollars.

Congratulations on getting back in the saddle and getting that insurance settlement.  I'm glad that the experience brought you into our community.
