The Chainlink

I'm not working next Saturday.

Who's in?

How have folks been feeling about the times they've been getting down there?

I once heard that thieves will try to catch vendors while they're lined up to enter to unload their stolen bikes, so I really feel like getting there early gives the greatest return on investment.

Should we plan to meet there at 8, with people arriving earlier as they see fit?

Is there value in having one large group assembled?

Remember to note whether you're in for Saturday, but let's have some back and forth to see how we can refine our approach.

Looks like I'm buying coffee..
I'm going to try to get down there is there is a ride leaving from the north side...
Good question-- Ron/anyone do you want to host a north side meetup/ride?
Coffee and donuts is huge.
I'm at 24th/Western, would make more sense for me to just head straight there.

Ill prob just meet everyone down there again. My 'loaner bike' (stupid theives) won't let me keep up with you guys for that distance.
You obviously have not payed attention to how slow I ride...

OK, let's nail down a plan and then I'll send a message to the group asking for a final RSVP and phone numbers.

Ron, you out there? Will you host a meetup at the same time and place as usual?
would we present ourselves at the council as a 'vigilante' group or just bring our findings to their attention? do you think we would be telling them something they dont already know, or is it more to say that WE know, too?

Will go through and summarize for Saturday later in the week.

A suggestion from a well respected bike advocate in regard specifically to Swap-O-Rama-- attend a Mayor's Bicycle Advisory Council meeting and bring it to the city's attention.

Thoughts?
You do ride slow . . .

What began as an ad hoc collection of individuals now has a name, its own chainlink sub-group, and over 20 self-identified members. Efforts have been undertaken to establish a protocol and identify tasks. Notwithstanding my inherent suspicion of group behavior, it seems to me that there are a number of different identified objectives for this group:

-Eliminate or reduce Bike Theft;
-Capture Bike Thieves;
-Photograph Bike Thieves;
-Capture “known” vendors of stolen bicycles;
-Photograph “known” vendors of stolen bicycles;
-Alert the authorities (police, alderman, Bicycle Advisory Council and/or City Council) to market(s) trafficking in stolen bicycles; and
-Recover stolen bicycles.

I believe each of these objectives has some merit, but also believe that some of these objectives are mutually exclusive.

Do we also need to refine objectives?

I'm actually not too excited about this idea personally, just passing it along because he took the time to call me and present it. I wouldn't be able to make such a meeting myself and if I could I think I would die of boredom waiting to present this problem. I don't understand the "vigilante" label though-- is there something not legit about a group of citizens forming a task force to try to solve a problem?

Copy of message sent to group (in case of another NING error-- grrrrr)

Apologies if this is a second message- the previous attempt to send only returned a NING error.

Please let me know if you'll be there if you haven't already-- ideally I would have everyone's phone number but barring that please call me Sat. AM to let me know you're coming.

I haven't been able to get a response from Ron about a north side meetup/ride time yet; let's plan to meet at the McDonald's at 43rd/Ashland by 8:15. There was an idea to have it serve as a 'base' but no-one has specifically volunteered to bring a laptop as of yet. Also if anyone can be available to search at home please speak up.

Thanks,
Howard

1. One who takes or advocates the taking of law enforcement into one's own hands.
2. A member of a vigilance committee.

It is a group of vigilantes and there is nothing wrong with that. ;-)

Good luck tomorrow and hope to see everyone at naked ride to get a full report! ;-)
