Original query:
Need a rec for a nice place to grab a bite. I tend to prefer small places, places off the beaten path, unusual or quirky in some way. Can be a little pricey. Anywhere in the city is fine. Thanks!

And now: the results (the mysterious NING gods gave us the power to edit an OP for eternity so why make anyone dig for this . . .)

Years of driving past Jane's and thinking it was worth a shot proved near fatal for me and my 11 year old son! NO JOKE. So we sit outside and order drinks. What followed was a nightmare straight from a Fellini film!
Son: "May I have a chocolate milk?
Waitress: "Hmm..don't know if we have chocolate milk but I"ll figure something out!"
Son and I: "Wow, that's very nice of you, THANKS!"

Waitress Returns with a cup brimming with apparently luscious chocoloate milke. Son takes a thirsty gulp.

Son: GAAAGGG "mom..this doesn't taste right !"
Like any mom, I take a sip and was shocked by the taste. It was either vomit or spit it out and I did..right at the wall. No time to think..automatic reflex. If it hadn't happened to me, this might even be funny....read on.

Waitress returns. I say. "There's something really wrong with this chocolate milk; it has a vile taste!"

Waitress sniffs and announces with a giggle worthy of a kick in the shin: "aaahhh; it smells funny, I think the kitchen was playing a trick on me!"

Mom: "What? Playing a trick? Well, whatever it is, it isn't funny!"
Waitress leaves and returns with another cup of milk and 2 scoops of chocolate ice cream.

Waitress: "uhhh. ....well, that wasn't chocolate, it was vinigar. Someone put vinigar in the milk instead of chocolage..heee...heee...heee."

By now I am doubtful of any food from this place and appalled by the gall of the waitress seeming to think that the whole thing was worthy of nothing more than a laugh at our expense. My son has severe allergies. Imagine if this "trick" had been peanuts..and the waitress thinging it's funny to admit that the staff tampers with food "as a joke!
I should have called the department of health (I still might.) So, I"m furious at her attitude and appalled by what happened. But read on ..here's what Ms. Flighty had to say after I rise and announce that I don't want her milk and that Im disgusted by what just happened:

Waitress: '''geeezeee...it was just a joke, a mistake.."

Later I write the owner. "oh..the waitress told me about that..she's a nice girl... i'll comp you a meal!"

NO THANKS.... YUK

Howard, the next time CCM goes north, I'll treat you to Alma Pita (4600 N. Magnolia -- entrance on Wilson Ave.) 773-561-2787 Alma Pita on Yelp. Alma Pita menu board images.
If Marty can get a break from his bustling schedule maybe we can hit the Trader Joe's Dumpster on the way there?
Or would that be better as a desert stop?

I don't think I saw Glenn's Diner (1820 West Montrose) on the list. Their early bird special really is the Best Deal in Town, excellent fish for $14
Z&H is excellent!!! I should have mentioned this one myself.

If cycling down south along the lakefront path go east on 47th street just past Woodlawn (about 4 blocks) to Z&H Market Cafe. Wonderful new breakfast and lunch Italian type deli. Great selection of coffees, hot cider, and Mexican hot chocolate.

Try the eggplant, it's to die for. Folks who run this place are really friendly. Bonus points if you notice the rug commemorating the russo-afghan war.

Word to the wise, the Bayless family of restaurants (Topo, Frontera, and Xoco) will all be closed for the first 11 days of January.

I was trying to do lunch next Friday at Xoco while my brother is in town, but no dice (or rather, no tortas)
