Scary. I ride down Damen all the time, I have no idea how a car could be moving fast enough to kill someone. Damen usually has few speed demons, it's very residential at that point. I've always considered Damen north of Diversey to be extremely safe, but you can't be too careful.

Stay safe folks.

I passed by shortly after the accident at about 2:50 pm, there appeared to be a bag covering up some blood on the road. My guess is that it was a traumatic head injury. Seeing that shook me up a bit. As I passed a couple blocks further north, an officer who was directing the south bound traffic off of Damen, I asked if the accident was fatal to which she replied yes and told me to be careful out there. This is a real tragedy especially when it happens on a road with a low speed limit and a designated bike lane. Please everyone, be careful and while it may not always prevent injury or death, consider wearing a helmet if you don't. My sincerest condolences to the bikers family and friends.
You don't have to be going very fast to kill someone with a car.

And of course the article gives no real idea what happened:

"Police say two bicyclists went around a CTA bus at a stop. One of the cyclists was then hit by a truck."

"Police said she was not wearing a helmet."

Of course.
More, though muddled, info here, including the young woman's name.
This spot is on my route home. I'm about to leave work. I kind of don't want to go. :( It sounds like it was just a tragic accident; she and her companion were waiting for a light to change, when she fell down under a vehicle and it went when the light turned green. The driver was unaware that she had fallen - reportedly it was a truck.

So sad.
I'd like to respectfully ask people to stop insinuating that the victim was at fault for not wearing a helmet - both out of common decency and common sense. It's nobody's place to speculate about causes and should-haves. And now that further details have been revealed it is especially inappropriate. I don't know how a helmet will save your life if you've been run over by a truck.
this is my daley route to work as well. Its strange that this intersection was the one where this horrible accident happens. My condolences to the victems family and friends. It just goes to show that accidents can happen anywhere. We all need to be more carefull out there.
According to this article, the 23 year old Lisa Whitacre was killed when she and her roommate were riding between a bus and truck, and she fell beneath the truck. The truckdriver had no idea.
There is a Lisa W on Chainlink - anyone know her?

I was heading south on Damen yesterday afternoon and encountered the police barricade. I could not find out any info at the time as to what was happening, they simply waved me off to go in another direction.
My condolences to the family and friends of the young woman who was killed.
we all need to be extra careful out there.
My condolences to Liza's friends and family.
Exactly.
First, I always wear a helmet, but I know that won't save me if I get run over by a truck.
Second, we all make stupid mistakes that could get us killed (not just on a bike:-), and I believe when people try to identify the "thing I would never do." It's primarily about the writer trying to make themselves feel invincible.
My condolences to Liza's family and friends.
