Sunday Sept 13: 25th North Shore Century

This is our 25th North Shore Century this Sunday, leaving from Dawes Park from 6 a.m. on (Evanston lakefront at Sheridan and Church St.)

What's in it for you: 25, 50, 62, 70, 100 mile rides (yeah, that's 307 miles of route, much of which I personally marked or checked) from Evanston northward as far as the Kenosha Velodrome. In addition to t-shirts for sale (i.e. we don't force you to buy one), we have a spiffy 25th anniversary jersey designed by Nancy Warren. More info here:

What's in it for cycling: Basically, we donate the proceeds. Our largest donee is ATA (formerly Chicagoland Bicycle Federation), but we also support LIB, LAB, Rails to Trails, 3 groups providing bicycles to medical workers in Africa, and local bicycle programs in Chicagoland.

IIRC, it had something to do with Eid-al-Fitr falling on the same date as the NSC, this year. I could be (and so often have been) wrong.

307 miles . . . wow, sounds time consuming-- hope you at least got good exercise if that was on a bike.
People keep asking me why you guys put the ride on the same day as the Boulevard Lakefront Tour-- wondering if you could clarify.

Sound like you are trying to make this more of an issue than it really is. See this link for an explanation from ATA (about 3 posts from the bottom).

Why Sept 13:
1. The weekend of Sept 20 is Rosh Hashanah. Many of our key volunteers have religious/family obligations that weekend. If you don't have your key area chairs, you don't have a ride.
2. There was a preliminary indication from ATA that the BLT was the first Sunday in September (that would be Sept 6). Over the years, the BLT has wandered around a bit -- it used to be in the spring -- so we didn't question that, although that information turned out to be incorrect. Instead of being 2 weeks apart like we were in 2008, we are both on the same date.
3. We set our date, ATA published theirs a bit later (although they had always intended Sept 13). The Harmon Hundred moved to August (and if it rains on Sunday, they get the last laugh).

Is this ideal? No. But this isn't a disagreement between EBC and ATA, and there's no need for Rob Sadowsky and I to kiss and make up (although one could imagine the photo op). I thank Duppie for providing the link to the ATA post.

I'm with you. I'm not sure why one group would take offense that a different biking event was scheduled on the same day, and I'm not even sure that it's a big deal at all. but I don't believe that the EBC needs to apologize or provide restitution to ATA. ATA has a huge member base, communications audience, media contacts and funding. They are clearly the larger organization here.

As far as the proceeds from the ride, this ride and others like it are the main fundraisers for the organizations that put them on. I agree with the right of EBC to raise funds via supported bike rides, to fund its operations. I think donating a portion of them to cycling organizations is generous; I don't think they need to channel all funds into these organizations, and certainly not in the name of "restitution".

Clarifying: We donate the proceeds, AFTER THE EXPENSES FOR THE EVENT are paid. These include printing brochures, rest stop permit fees, buying cans of paint, printing cue sheets, feeding the hungry masses, etc. This ride is entirely volunteer -- we don't have paid staff.

I agree, great ride!
Many thanks to EBC for putting together such a well-run ride with good street markings and great snacks at the SAGs.

I'm glad that both NSC and BLT happened this year and on a perfect weather day. For a few years now, these events have usually been ONE week apart, with BLT on the 2nd weekend in September and NSC on the 3rd weekend. I understand that having the NSC on the 3rd weekend would NOT have been workable this year, due to so many key players and many riders having a holiday conflict.

Unfortunately, having both rides on 9/13 created a hardship for both events in terms of riders and volunteers. I hope we can work together to avoid this conflict next year. Having the rides on different dates is better for everyone.
