Not about pedestrians, not about motorists, just about our fellow cyclists. We are all so different that stuff is bound to frustrate when we approach riding in such different ways, explain to those we think are less experienced, etc. Ok, tell us your stories, tell us your pet peeves, we're all friends!

I'll start out with a pet peeve of mine... The cyclist that blows past me so close to me I felt the wind of their SWOOOOOSH as they fly past me but they say nothing to warn me. We're in tight quarters in the bike lane. Buy a bell and/or tell me you are there!

p.s. sure, your pet peeve may be the forum post that's been done before but I kinda feel like this tucks into other topics so this time I'm giving the pedal pet peeve front and center.

I'm mixed race and have experienced racism first hand.

Is that a lecture?

BTW: it's not so bad these days but thanks for bringing up all those bad memories

Thank you Curtis.

Irv, you want to have a bigger conversation about "women being sexist"? I was hoping you'd make an effort to learn about what women face when riding a bike rather than try to flip the tables using false logic. How unfortunate.

Are you disappointed about not being able to attend the women-only screening of Wonder Woman (superman cartoon pic instead of a real photo of yourself... just sayin')? To say that sexism is isolated to a 30-second incident is to ignore the much larger picture about sexism women face daily on bikes and in general.

Here's a general comment about sexism as it recently related to the women-only screening:
http://elitedaily.com/entertainment/film/heres-actually-impossible-...

...the concept of sexism is even broader than that when it comes to how it plays out in actual society.

Sexism, like racism, is systemic, which is why feminism exists to address how women are oppressed socially, economically, and politically.

Since male privilege breeds entitlement, men can be upset about being merely excluded from a screening in Texas.

Meanwhile, women all over the world are excluded from certain pay grades and positions of power and influence. In our current administration, women can't even get invited to political meetings where decisions are being made about women's health care.

Not getting invited to a women's-only film or any other female-centric event doesn't affect the material, day-to-day reality of men, but women are purposefully kept out of the rooms filled with conversations that directly affect their lives and well-being.

And the definition of sexism:

The sexism claim might be a true matter of concern except that women can't be sexist.

Merriam-Webster defines sexism as

1:  prejudice or discrimination based on sex; especially :  discrimination against women

2:  behavior, conditions, or attitudes that foster stereotypes of social roles based on sex

And in cycling:

All you have to do is Google and you'll see a lot of women all over our country and in England experiencing sexism while riding a bike. Do you typically get discriminated against for being a man? It's assumed women are slower. It is also assumed men are faster. Context is everything.

As always, well said Yasmeen.

Thanks kb

OOF you deserve alllll the cold refreshments for carrying that education weight. I went looking for a good gif, but there were too many. +1 billion.

Thanks. I used this gif earlier in the thread and I think it's still relevant. Also, she's my hero of the month

Amen.

You put words in my mouth, don't read what I wrote, and continue to avoid answering a simple question.

My point is only this (nothing else):

  1. that to know someone requires more than just a brief encounter and specifically more than a non verbal one; as well, to make assumptions based on that persons visual appearance is to prejudge them
  2. shoaling is about being first - not about being faster

I RECLAIM MY TIME! Is about not answering a direct question. How ironic!

Yasmeen DID respond to your "direct" question. "I was hoping you'd make an effort to learn about what women face when riding a bike rather than try to flip the tables using false logic."

She just didn't take the bait.

I like this one from OnlyCHICyclerWhoStopsAtStopSigns"[It] just really, really angers me. Just freakin' stop at the stop sign. . . . It gives all of us a bad name."

I came to a stop at a stop sign because the car that was faster than me on my left (I was going south, car was heading west) got there first and had the right of way. So I stopped... a rider to my right was about to pass me and noticed what was going on. He stopped past the cross walk. I just raised my eyebrows, all 12 of them, and went about my business.

People yelling at you for not putting your foot down at a stop sign? Then they should have to put it in park, turn off the ignition, step out of the vehicle and turn around 3 times prior to proceeding.
