The Chainlink

Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-)

My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.

Update: More Hashtags to Capture Vehicles in the Bike Lane

With popular hashtags:
#BikeLaneShaming

#LaneSpreading (Chicago Bike Selling)

#ClearTheWay (ActiveTrans), there are many options to capture violations.

We think you should use ALL of them AND post your photos on The Chainlink. ;-)

225 N Franklin St. 311 report submitted. I had a few heated words with the mail carrier. I asked her if she knew it was illegal to park in a bike lane. She replied, "Go ahead! Take the damn picture!". Apparently they don't give a rat's a** if they're endangering lives. The mail must get through! Even though there is ample parking across the street.

OK, this is an official "WTF". 200 yards of open parking in front of the van.

One would think DIVVY employees, of all people, would know better. o_O

Hi Argonne69. I work for Divvy, and appreciate you sharing this so we can correct the driver. Can you tell us what time and date this photo was taken? That way, we can follow up with the driver to ensure that they aren't parking in the bike lane. In accordance with the law, and as members of the bike community, this isn't acceptable behavior for our staff. If you can share any details, please shoot us a note to info@divvybikes.com. Thanks again for sharing.

The photo file name contains the date and time: 20170727_164011.

It was taken on Thursday, 7/27, at 4:40 pm.

As I rode up and took the picture, I said to the driver, "Really?" He replied, "There's no where else to park." As I rode past I said, "How about the 200 yards of curb in front of the bikes?"

Thank you for following up on this. It's a persistent issue with Divvy drivers.

I was reminded this morning why I had stopped taking the State and Wabash lanes. Multiple stopped vehicles blocking the lanes all along this route, including not one but two semis parked across the "protected" lane while unloading food and beer for Reggie's.

348 N. Dearborn St. 311 report submitted.

Me: You do know that it's illegal to park in a bike lane?

FedEx driver: They (the manager of the Fed Ex Store) said it was OK to park there".

Me: The manager doesn't make the traffic laws in the city. That's a $150 fine.

Kudos @Argonne69 for reporting all of your sightings.  Do you know if any of the vehicles you have reported have been ticketed?

No, not a single one. On Franklin and Wells the vehicle are almost always occupied, as they are either waiting for a fare, or dropping off a passenger. 125 S Franklin and 225 N Franklin are the two hotspots, as there are office buildings there.

Anyone know of accidents that have resulted from these illegally-parked/stopped vehicles where litigation was brought against the owners/companies/organizations?
