I don't know if it's the best, but I take Milwaukee north to Augusta; Augusta west to Park ave in Forest Park; Park south to the Illinois Praire Path. The IPP begins at the end of the Blue Line and it cuts through Concordia cemetery, then take the IPP to straight to Glen Ellen.
Zesty,

The Illinois Prairie Path is the nicest way to get there;
it goes right by Glen Ellen:

From Hyde Park catch the Green Line to Forest Park.
Check out the Chicagoland Bike Map, available at shops
for the connection from Forest Park to the trailhead in Maywood.

If you wanna do it all by bike, take the Lakefront Trail to Roosevelt
to Damen to Washington to get to River Forest.

Best,

John Greenfield
All by bike- I like the Milwaukee to Augusta to IPP route idea-Also, anybody got a mileage estimate?

First, you probably meant Glen Ellyn.

Yes, IPP is crushed limestone, but not until you get to Elmhurst. Watch for glass on the east side. From downtown, I would do:

Augusta -> Thatcher -> Washington -> 5th Avenue -> IPP.
