The Chainlink

Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-)

My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.

Update: More Hashtags to Capture Vehicles in the Bike Lane

With popular hashtags:
#BikeLaneShaming

#LaneSpreading (Chicago Bike Selling)

#ClearTheWay (ActiveTrans), there are many options to capture violations.

We think you should use ALL of them AND post your photos on The Chainlink. ;-)

Today's parking wanker:

Wow, who knew there were drivers more stupid than the ones in Chicago. Huh.

Equally stupid IMO.  The exact same thing happened when they installed parking "protected" lanes on Kinzie, Canal, Des Plaines, etc.  Heck, it still happens on occasion.

We know you’ve seen it: delivery trucks obstructing bike lanes, construction sites that render sidewalks treacherous or impassable, and people who think that crosswalks serve as parking spots. We see it a lot, too, and think it’s time to step up enforcement of these law-flouting drivers and construction companies.

Dangerous conditions like these were the target for a recent campaign called Clear the Way in which we asked our Chicago supporters to document each time they saw one of these violations by taking a photo, filing a report via 311, and then posting the photo on social media. Over just a couple of months, we received more than 500 reports from people all over the city.

How does one submit a report? Is the CtW campaign still active?

Might as well just reactivate it on our own.  I put a comment on the Active Trans web page referenced above. Twitter is still free!

I've snapped 66 violators over the past 2 months. I'm afraid emailing the photos would blow up an inbox. Can I send a link to an online album?

The AT article states "It was encouraging to see a new “bike lane blockage” category added to the system, and construction blockages of sidewalks and bike lanes should also be added." However, there is no bike lane blockage category other than one for construction (which the article indicates isn't there).

We're talking about the 311 website 'Request Service' page, right? Where do you see the a construction lane blockage category? I don't see any service type related to blockage.

It is after you get to the bicycle program request section, and type in/submit the street address there should be a drop down menu to select the type of service you want by "What is the nature of bicycle request?"
