The Chainlink

Our downtown office building provides bike racks in the underground parking garage for free bicycle parking. In the summer, all 3 racks are full. Recently I've noted a couple small gas scooters and electric bikes locked to the rack. Wonder how people feel about alternative 2 wheelers taking up conventional bike space? I guess my feelings are mixed. I appreciate the fact that a scooter is taking the place of an SUV but I also hate to see regular bikes being crowded out. Thoughts?

Small gas scooters annoy me because they are stinky and obnoxious. They aren't too bad when they are sitting parked but I sure don't want to be right next to them unlocking my bike when somebody decides to start one up.

My bigger peeve though is the people who think bike racks near stores are substitute shopping cart corrals. Carts are almost always blocking the rack at the TJs at Grace and Lincoln. Also the Home Depot at Kimball south of Addison has a bike rack but you would never know it because it is alway buried under seasonal merchandise displays. I often complain to store personel and then park my bike & trailer in the center car parking spot.
As long as it has working pedals, it is legal to park on a sidewalk. No pedals must use a space on the street.
I've complained repeatedly at their service desk. They always sound like they are taking the complaint and will pass it on, but if the complaints are being passed on they are falling on deaf ears or someone entirely unsympathetic to cyclist's need for a place to park.

I used to shop at my local ACE hardware whenever possible even though it was more expensive than HD because of their better consideration for cyclists. Unfortunately, my support was insufficient for them to survive the economic downturn and they went belly up a couple months ago.
