...reserved for someone who would steal a bike from a cyclist who was knocked out cold in a fall.  Just sayin'.

"I was biking to school and my front wheel flew off. I was knocked unconscious and taken to the hospital. Once I regained consciousness I was told my bike was locked up. Upon arriving to North Avenue Beach 3 hours later I was informed by some local security who were there when I fell that my bike was taken by some lady Daisy who works for the Park District Security who said she'd keep my bike safe till I came back. The number she provided was bogus and after calling 10 different departments nobody knows a lady Daisy. I filed a police report, but I'm trying to not give up hope."

I am sorry this happened and hope you recover your bike. I do not understand how your front wheel "flew" off... Did you file off the lawyer tabs? A quick release lever would have to be really loose to pass these tabs and you would have noticed the front wheel wobble.

Good point, Michael.  The young fellow this happened to didn't provide any clarification on just why his wheel came off or how fast he was going when it happened.  My outrage is pointed more toward the person who took the bike for safekeeping while the kid was in the hospital and then promptly disappeared, leaving a fake phone number to contact her.

It's been a sickening day at the CSBR all around.

A few hours ago a report from someone who basically stole his bike back from a vendor at Swap-O-Rama.

It always sickens me to hear of cyclists risking their safety to get  their bikes back.

This morning a report from someone who found their bike for sale by a thief on the street, and bought it from the thief.

it sickens me more to hear that someone bought their bike back from the thief.

i am pretty sure i saw the aftermath of the accident.  (based on the time on the CSBR)  there were plenty of Park District people there.  i actually though he collided with the Park District minivan.  Sorry to hear about the theft.  i hope you find your bike.  feel shitty that i did not stop.  I saw the ambulance pull up and figured they had the situation under control.

Yes, if I had to rank these on the sickening scale, I'd agree. I would not describe my response to the message informing of that "recovery" as particularly gracious.

Property crimes do not justify physical violence.  Even though the police are not out there actively fighting bike theft, it is still usually possible to get police help to recover one's own bicycle from a thief.

I wouldn't buy it back, I'd beat the thief's ass for it and then provide evidence it belongs to me.

Disagree. My bike is my commuter vehicle, my #1 source of fun, and a huge part of my identity. If I catch someone stealing it, I will take measures I deem appropriate. Theft laws aren't a deterrent, and the cops usually won't even show up if you call them while it's being stolen.
