Anyone else witness a scary driver/cyclist altercation on Milwaukee near California this morning just before 9am? The driver turned out to be a (surprise!) cop? He endangered at least a half a dozen cyclists.

No, though that's on my commute and i was by there just after 9. What kind of vehicle? What did they do?

You can see a more detailed story on Rapid Transit's Facebook page.

For those of you not on FB here is a cut and paste of the text:

"Did anyone else witness a scary driver/cyclist incident on Milwaukee near California this morning just before 9 am? The driver in a primer-painted muscle car was swerving in and out of the bike lane into a group or riders, causing them to scatter all over the road. He eventually cut off one of the cyclists by opening the door in front of him, forced him off the bike, shoved him against the car, which is when I realized the driver was a ... cop."

That's very much appreciated.

Wish I could say I'm surprised.

In case anyone is wondering how I knew he was a cop, he had a badge around his neck.

Must have just missed it

This is why I want to mount a GoPro or other video camera to my bike.

I've been thinking of doing the same thing.  In the past two months, I've been the victim of a hit-and-run, prevented another person's hit-and-run and pulled up just after someone else was hit by a car.  Hopefully, I'd never need the footage but it could help other cyclists as well.  And maybe record a few critical mass rides with it.

Any witnesses need to take this to a lawyer then the police review board / IA!

I absolutely agree. The Facebook synopsis doesn't really clarify the incident at all but regardless the situation, it is not acceptable. Do people really think is standard operating procedure?

+1

If ever I found a Genie in an oil lamp I know what my first wish would be...

My god, is there any greater road hazard and threat to life than an off-duty cop behind the wheel? Every week it's either intentional or inadvertent intimidation on the part of these guys. There is no more entitled and self-righteous motorist.

Based upon the description, behavior is unacceptable.  However, anyone ever considered that he was not off-duty but undercover and was actually looking for the guy he "stopped"?  Just sayin'.
