Share 'route suggestion for tonight? UKV to portage park?'

wondering about the best/safest bike route to get from western and chicago to milwaukee and lawrence? google maps sends me on a lot of turns, doesn't milwaukee have a bike lane pretty much all the way there? i don't mind taking the lane or riding in traffic, but would go a bit out of the way if it's smoother sailing. thanks in advance.
