Boy I am nice. ;-) The HGH thing wasn't set up when i said my hello. :-) As for the busted wing i was going to try going back to work tomorrow but can't so my boss isn't pleased, but that's life. Thanks for asking! ;-)
Hey, Hyde Parker! I don't think we've met. There were a number of social rides that got posted on the (now defunct?) Hyde Park bicycle newsgroup that I intended to join and somehow never quite made (new baby and all), and I've never ridden with any of the UCVC or Team Tati folks. (Although I see these groups all the time on my way to work -- at least in the warmer months. If you ride with them regurlarly in the morning, you've likely scene me commuting north when you are on your return to Hyde Park.)
I'm starting to do more things now with Tati, and am hoping to get more involved with the Hyde Park biking scene (such as it is) now that my boy is getting older. Don't know if I'll make that jump to racing, though.
I just started taking those maintenance courses at Tati, in large part to get connected to the Hyde Park bike scene and to support J's efforts to get something going in what should be -- given the Univeristy and the general gestalt of Hyde Park -- a very active cycling neighborhood.
Oh man! That's a great location. It'd be easy to take the streetcar out of downtown and head up to the Garden District (which I'd definitely recommend. So many people just stay downtown and miss out on the GD). From where you're staying, one of the city's premier restaurants (Delmonico) is just a jaunt away on St. Charles. It's pricey, an Emeril joint, and is pretty damn amazing! Also, right by the Lee Circle area is the D-Day museum. I've never actually been, but by many accounts, it's something really interesting to check out. And the Aquarium at the end of Canal St. is also worth seeing. And in the same complex as the aquarium is an IMAX theater, if you're so inclined. There's also a movie theater in Canal Place (I used to work there!) that shows most/y independent/art/foreign films.
If you make it to the French Quarter, I'd basically bypass Bourbon St. and head down Decatur instead. Grab some beignets at Cafe du Monde (adjacent to Jackson Square). Right past Jackson Square is more local-centric. Molly's on the Market is a pretty neat bar that's in that area.
Avoid anything that reeks of a chain establishment. They're just tourist traps that hawk mediocrity and cater solely to tourists.
If you head Uptown/Garden District-ward, you can grab a real reasonable and GREAT lunch special at Commander's Palace on Washington St. And the restaurant is right by an old interesting cemetery that is worth checking out. Get the bread pudding for dessert.
You can also rent bikes at Bicycle Michael's on Frenchmen. It's located about a mile or two away from Lee Circle, but it'd make for a nice walk through the Quarter if you head there. There's also a pretty nice new bike path from the city's Art Museum that runs to Lake Ponchartrain. You can ask the Bicycle Michael's guys for good routes to get there. And hell, the museum is also a pretty great place to check out. It's certainly not in the caliber of Chicago's, but if you're an art/museum dork like me, it's worth seeing.
If you can make it to the Bywater, there's some good BBQ to be found at the Joint. It's on Poland Ave (I think!).
I've also heard those "Devastation Tours" are pretty interesting. They take you around to parts of town that were devastated by Katrina and get in to some detail. I made those rounds on my own several months after Katrina, and it's pretty awe-inspiring (in a profoundly awful way).
So this is just a smattering of ideas. Let me know what kind of stuff you'd be in to doing, and I could throw a more comprehensive list your way. have fun!
And if you're in to Sushi at all, New Orleans doesn't disappoint. Look for Sushi Bros., Oshun (great lunch specials!), Sake Cafe, and Ninja to name a few. And try as she might, the city struggles to deliver great pizza. But if you get the itch, go to Slice on St. Charles. They also have unreal specials on pitchers of locally-made IPA. Mmm...hoppy.;-)
fantastic! at this point, i'm most definitely interested in your rear derailleur...and maybe more parts depending on what i can swap out with this other rider who's looking to convert to double. let me know how much you're looking for it. have you done the upgrade yet?
thanks so much!
hey!
sorry i did not see you had commented before.
I'm checking on whether the person i'm swapping with has shimano 105 rear derailleur--if not, i'm going with yours-thanks!
question though--do you think i'll need to swtich out the front derailleur as well?
i'll check on this and let you know. thanks so much again!

Hopefully we'll link up at some point.
