hi lee - thanks! i owe you an email back, stay tuned for it!
  • globalguy

Don't mention it. The pleasure was all mine. Afterward, John and I hung out at Mirabel on Addison to quaf beer & much cased meats!
  • Ron

I can't make it to this weekend's ride but think it would be cool to join you guys another time. I might try and make it to the party tonight.
  • Bill G

    Lee,
I am considering joining your ride on Saturday. I live quite a distance away, so the weather will be a determining factor. The cold doesn’t bother me much, but poor road conditions (snow/ice) will. Many years ago I grew up in Albany Park, thus the draw. Can you clarify the start/meet point? Your post says Gomper’s park but the I-map-my-ride route looks like it starts in LaBaugh woods. Also, the way I remember it, Gomper’s park is on either side of Foster.
    Thank you,
    Bill Grimm

    thanks for the quick info

Lee, I'm looking to buy a place really soon and would love to go see some places on a bike! I've been looking for a real estate agent like yourself for a while! Anyways, I'm preapproved for a mortage through Chase and would like to look at place ASAP. My email is pmonko1@gmail.com

    Thanks

    Peter Monko

Ya, I'll be at the Hidden Shamrock on Thursday. I didn't think you were trying to skip out; the weather was pretty rough. Hope you all had a good ride back to Gompers.
  • Ross Felten

Dude, the Bertha bike looks great! and I learned a little piece of Chicago history I did not know before. The uppity socialite did some good things for the city.
Can't wait to see the H.H. Holmes serial killer bike!
  • Tim Daisy

Thanks for hipping me to this amazing site!
  • niconico

dude you should do a pilsen/lower west side tour for sure. lots of good history still standing.
  • Tom Andersson

Sorry I missed your ride through North Center. I'd like to make it to your next ride.
  • Becky Mikrut

Awesome!!! you are only the second person I know besides myself with a sekine. Great!
  • laurenviera

Thanks, Lee! You are a wealth of information. I did some heavy-duty elbow-greasin' of my Dunelt awhile back but it's due for another cleanup, mostly on the paint, which I'm having trouble with. The chrome is shining nice but the black paint is killing me. Suggestions?

Here's the 3speed Hub info you wanted from the great Prophet Sheldon!

    How A 3-Speed Works

Internal-geared hubs work on the principle of "planetary gearing."

The basic 3-speed hubs have a single "sun" gear solidly attached to the middle of the axle. A set of 3 or 4 identical "planet" gears mesh with and revolve around the "sun" gear. The "planet" gears are surrounded by (and mesh with) an inside-out "gear ring".

As the planet gears, attached to a part called a "planet cage" revolve, the gear ring revoles 4 times for every 3 times the planet cage goes around. (Some models have different ratios.)

    * Low Gear has the sprocket driving the gear ring, while the planet cage drives the hub. Thus, the wheel turns 3 times for every 4 revolutions of the sprocket, lowering the gear by 25%.

    * Middle Gear has the sprocket still driving the gear ring, but has the gear ring drive the hub. Thus, the drive is direct. Although the internal gears are always rotating when the sprocket is in motion, they don't have any effect on the drive in middle gear.

    * High Gear shifts the sprocket's drive to the planet cage, while the gear ring continues to drive the hub shell. Thus, the hub turns around 4 times for every 3 sprocket revolutions, giving a 33% gear increase.

There is a more detailed explanation of this on the Sturmey-Archer Website, from which I lifted the image above. Also more info on adjusting the hubs here.

    hey lee,
i am going to look into the commercial stain remover you recommended for rust removal on my dunelt. just picked it up from boulevard yesterday post-tune-up (much needed) and they did a really nice job of cleaning it up, so i was spared some trouble...
thanks & hope all is well!

Nice job with the tour of Austin. What a blast.
  • Jerome Hughes

Thanks for Tour of Austin, it was great fun, wish we could have stayed on for the rest. We did have a nice ride back west to Elmhurst instead.
  • Cynthia Bell

Austin Bike Tour was great. We had over 100 people show up. I would like to organize something on a monthly basics and try to engage more African American to ride there bikes!

Hi, Lee! I didn't even see your wall post till now. Thanks for saying hey. Jerry has been limiting his cycling distances since he was hobbled by chronic tendinitis in his hamstring, and I've been racing this summer, so we haven't had time to get to any of the neighborhood tours. Ironically enough, once the weather gets crappy we'll probably start getting out more on organized rides.

All of the homes (except 1 or 2) S. Millard between Ogden and 16th have Romanesque pillars on their porches and almost all have extensive carved and/or molded decorations on their greystone fronts. I've seen similar homes here and there in Lawndale and other parts of the South side, but I haven't noticed so many very similar homes in a two block stretch anywhere else on the south side.
  • Andrew Bedno

Lee, you set the bar. Your preparedness is perfect and your tours worth paying for.
  • Doug Haynes

I figured that group was a good place for it...

Something about that guy annoys me.
  • Ian

Lee, things are good. I hope to make it out this Sat., and may be driving (time constraints on the evening) from Bucktown?WP nbrhd. If anyone needs a ride (with or without their bike) please put him/her/them in touch with me.
  • Vilda

Great Ride and thanks for the after party at Janiks! ;-) Great stuff! ;-)
  • Ron

Hi Lee, that message disappeared when I accepted the friend request. Sounds like perhaps you saw the Schwinn on CL? With the long Shimano brake. That thing worked really well. I'd give up a lot to be able to get more of them.
