I think my top 2 moments are:
1. The kid eating watermelon cookie monster style until he was sick
2. Buying PBR from the girl scouts
Unfortunately I got sick at the begining was getting progressively worse heat exhaustion/stroke as the week went on until I finally sagged on Friday. Probably would have been better had a skipped that heat on tuesday.
Kathy I saw you and Suzy several times, but most notably at the pie and ice cream stop on Saturday when Suzy was barking at the kittens :)
My favorite part of RAGBRAI was probably witnessing the fierce intensity with which my wife charged us up Potter's Hill. I've never walked up a hill on a RAGBRAI (well, maybe on my first one when I was 12), but being new to tandem riding, my wife on her first RAGBRAI, and having heard stories all week about Potter's "Hell," I thought for sure we'd be walking. Nope. We made it to the top. Awesome.
Kathy- We passed you and Suzy out there one day, but it was on a different hill and you looked pretty focused on it so we didn't slow down to chat.
a rider told me he saw Suzy's photo on the Ragbrai blog but I can't find it. If you have seen it, please post the URL here.
Here's what I sent to the Bike Friday blog about Ragbrai.
Suzy and I did every single mile, including the optional Century Loop. We didn't have any flats. We had only one rainy day during which I taught Suzy to catch pieces of apple in her mouth - a first for her. Then we got on our Bike Friday and continued with the brave folks who never paused as we did for an hour or so on the porch of a pastor's house.
We raised $330.00 for Chicago Canine Rescue Foundation from people who photographed Suzy Schnauzer wearing her helmet in her basket. We walked only on the hills where other people were already walking, starting with a mile long hill described as a "Potter's Hell." We stayed with 7 gracious Iowa hosts and always had our own private room. We ate corn and pork and used lots of sunscreen (on me anyway).
We'll do it again next year with Out of Staters charter and recommend them highly. We saw at least a dozen Fridays and maybe two Tuesdays. No Saturdays. One unicycle, one tallbike and loads of recumbents were seen. One bike built without a seat. A few other kinds of folding bikes. A tandem that's also a cargo bike, still in the experimental stage. Riders of all ages. Six dogs altogether. No cats. It's loads of fun and we recommend registering for RAGBRAI to anybody who can do 509.07 miles in 8 days. www.ragbrai.com
and check out newyorktimes.com because Suzy and I were photographed and interviewed for a video to be posted on August 3rd I'm told by the reporter.

my favorite part: the whole thing, it was just amazing, the water slides and swing, thousands of bicycles all humming together, the pacelines that i followed for a little bit, the food and of course the people that i met along the way. i have enough money each year, i WILL be there. before RAGBRAI, never biked over 40 miles in a day, and i did my first century on Monday.
