Route Planning Top Hints

I'd like to build a list of the TOP HINTS / Guidelines / Advice for designing a group ride route.

There was a CCM faq doc with good basics, ending with a last hint that one should ignore advice, but I can't find it anymore. Figured might as well restart the topic anyway. Would like to get a nice clean agreeable top few dozen. Can I get some help here?
