Anyone know the sizes that Motobecane Grand Touring mixte frames were made in?  I know it probably varied through the years.

For those of you interested in seeing excellent vintage bikes, there is a Classic Bicycle Show and Swap this Sunday, August 15 at Village CycleSport, 1313 N. Rand Road, Arlington Heights. For more detail you can see their website.

ha , ha . . . with a 27 year old bike and a 58 year old rider I won't be going to war at all. ;^D

"As you know, you go to war with the bottom bracket you have. It's not the bottom bracket you might want or wish to have at a later time."

OK, here's the scoop. Velo-Orange does have a French threaded sealed bottom bracket. We can be 99.99% sure that my Peugeot does not have French threads. It has either Swiss (same threads as French except fixed cup is left hand threads) or BSC. Upon dissassembling the BB it looked so good that I put some fresh Phil Wood grease in the cups and put it back together. With a reasonable liklihood that the BB is Swiss the only option available is Phil Wood cups (retainers) and bottom bracket. Cost >$150. Frankly, the bicycle isn't worth that much invested in the bottom bracket. Properly maintained it will last another twenty years and more. Thanks for the input Moc Artsy. I did find out something else in the Sheldon Brown write-up. The Stronglight spindle is JIS, not ISO. That would have probably presented another problem.

Mr. Red,
Here is the Sheldon Brown BB size data base, which should help you out.

I have heard rumors of French threaded sealed bottom brackets, but I won't believe this until I actually see one. I doubt there is a Swiss sealed BB, but I am also pretty sure that 1980's Peugeots were (finally) built on ISO standards, in which case you will need to know the BB shell width and the spindle length for whatever crankset you are installing, and you should easily find a sealed BB that will fit. Best to take the bike into your LBS or West Town and have them fit you. Another option, of course, is to repack the BB you have. It's not at all difficult and it's a good skill to master. It's also really rewarding to spin a nice snug and smooth BB that you overhauled yourself.

Help! Anyone have experience changing a mid-eighties Peugeot bottom-bracket to a sealed BB? I have an '83 PB14 and wonder how I can tell for sure if I have a BSC threaded BB or a Swiss threaded BB. Any help would be appreciated. BTW, the retaining ring on the non-drive side is stamped with an 'S'. WTF ???
