Randonneuring Defined

Randonneuring: Randonneuring is long-distance unsupported endurance cycling. This style of riding is non-competitive in nature, and self-sufficiency is paramount. When riders participate in randonneuring events, they are part of a long tradition that goes back to the beginning of the sport of cycling in France and Italy. Friendly camaraderie, not competition, is the hallmark of randonneuring.

The 300k completely wiped me out on Saturday. Thanks to Tom Stewart from Des Plaines for helping make the first leg painless, and to Mike from Rochelle for helping me through the last 100 miles and lighting my way through the dark. Me and my puny headlight wouldn't have made it w/o him.

I'm signed up for the 400 and 600 coming up, but after the trial that was the 300 for me, I don't see that happening. Don't get me wrong; I had an amazing time. I would love to be able to complete the series, but I think the 300 showed I just don't have the conditioning for it this season. Like Adam said, my hat is seriously off to you Super Randonneurs. You people are truly amazing.

Do you guys need reg help for any of the brevets?  I had a great time meeting some of you at reg last year.

Adam,

The combination of heat and wind made the brevets challenging for all of us. Can you identify any specific limiting factors that you are experiencing?  Hopefully some people in the group will be able to offer suggestions.

The 200K Brevet continues to be a challenge for me.  I look up to you Super Randonneurs even more now.

We are hoping the wind will help us on our 24-hour ride from Naperville to  Wisconsin Dells, leaving at 6PM Friday. We'll be passing through Delavan in the pre-dawn hours. More here: 2012 Upper Midwest Flech Get Together

Weather forecast for Sat shows temps at 80s, S wind of ~15mph. It is not going to be easy :)

Thanks Lee!  I'm trying the 200K route again this weekend.  Accuweather says Sunny and Warm for us, "breezy" with wind from the South.

Randonneurs,

I've added a page with some more detailed information on the 300km route at Route Information: 300k. In the next few weeks each route will have its own detail page on the GLR site.

I hope this information is helpful, please feel free to share any comments or suggestions.

Thanks to GLR. I had a great time and met some and rode with some fine cyclist. It was a little ambitious for a first ride of the season but I did well enough...definitely something to build on.

Inspiring progress Scott, well done sir!

As far as the aftermath, this was the best of my handful of 200K brevets.  But I think I will try to improve my 200K time before attempting a 300K.
