Randonneuring Defined

Randonneuring: Randonneuring is long-distance unsupported endurance cycling. This style of riding is non-competitive in nature, and self-sufficiency is paramount. When riders participate in randonneuring events, they are part of a long tradition that goes back to the beginning of the sport of cycling in France and Italy. Friendly camaraderie, not competition, is the hallmark of randonneuring.

FVP is indeed a good preparation, not only that, it is in fact a proper 200K.  I was planning to ride FVP or shorter variations on long weekends, but that did not happen, most long weekends were spent working on bikes rather than riding them :)  I have no plans currently.

I'm seeing alot of concern over making the 200K in 13.5 hours.  Training is important mostly for your muscle recovery, etc, however, if you have riden plently of centuries, riding that extra 25 miles should not be an issue.  The main key to remember, is do not go off at the pace of the lead riders, go off at "your" pace, and maintain "your" pace all the way.  I'm sure all of you ride at least 12MPH average, hopefully more like 15MPH average.  Not counting any head wind issues.  Training?! - spinning is great.  Come later March or April, start up your weekend riding.  Ride and build upon mileage, 30, 40, 50, 60, 75 mile rides.  Do at lease one 100 if you can, but dont lose sleep if you do not.  Think about those of us who have done 1200K rides.  We only train for 600K and then are foolish to go ride 1200K, that's another topic for later.  We all make it, its about pacing yourself.  The group is great especially if you hit a weekend with a terrible headwind.  So fine a friend or two or new one that rides like you do.  Basically, I'm trying to say, don't sweat this too much.  If you have riden plently of centuries, almost everyone I've seen finishes a 200K, 125 mile ride without issue (between 9 and 12 hours - believe it or not, not many at teh 13.5 hour mark), except for the mechanical mishaps.  So one last TIP - check that bike out before coming up to Delavan.  More tips in the coming weeks.

Mike

if you are planning on riding the delavan 200, please email me off line.  I would like to know about any construction issues, detours that need to be reviewed and other.  I also plan on previewing the route in april, with time to print cue sheets by our first May 11th 200K / 300K.  Please give me a status update if and when you complete it.

i'm tentitively planning to ride part of the Delavan 200 course on the saturday before Easter, largely to check the course markings and road conditions, partly to torture myself. This will be largely a weather-dependent affair and i wouldn't expect to be able to do a full 200 by much inside the time limit this early on. Hell, even my better times are somewhat, um, tortoise-like. A lot will depend on how much road time i can get in the next couple of weeks. i'm also hoping to do the Quad Cities rando April 6. i did it a couple of years ago and had a good time.

It's not a race, after all...

I think Ilter and Adam prefer to ride at an..umm..cyclotourist pace. I'm not sure if you've set a goal for how long you want to do the 200K in; this would determine what average speed you'd need to maintain throughout the brevet.

James, DJM and I rode the NSC at a 13-15 mph pace, and I know we were slowing DJM down, lol.

I'm not necessarily looking to get faster (doing intervals, etc.) but more interested in working on my cycling form, spinning, and doing some work on my core so I keep less weight on my hands and fight numbness.

If you've got some ideas for routes and putting time in the saddle, let me know. I'll gladly join you.

I'd be interested in joining on the FVP as well. As far as group rides, I can definitely organize some here, but my knowledge of suitable roads to ride outside of the city is very limited. Most of my past long distance rides were a culmination of stringing together bike paths from Chicago to Northwest Indiana (Crown Point, The Dunes, etc), which is great for getting distance, but not exactly great for speed as there are a lot of stops, especially in Hammond. I've also ridden up to Kettle Moraine from Harvard which is a 100 mile round trip and great for hills...the downfall being the Metra ride to Harvard and back. At what pace do you guys normally ride at?

I am planning on riding those dates as well.  As the weather improves i am planning on some progressively longer rides. I am hoping the sun will make short work of the impending snow and i am able to get 50 in next sunday. if you planning a group ride please post it i would like to attend.

spence - I'm going to be 'training' the way I have for 100+ mile rides the same as last year - have solid base miles and increase mileage in steps. Obviously, your mileage may be based on your personal time commitments. If you can, try to use the weekends to 'step' up your bigger rides.

Also, we are lucky to have the Fox Valley Permanent not too far away (Naperville.) Ilter has been riding this a couple of years now ( I think.) I believe Adam Z, Ilter and I have plans sometime this Spring to ride either portions or the whole thing in anticipation of the first official brevet of the series.

I'm planning on the May 11 GLR 200km brevet (as well as the 300km brevet in June 1). Is there a group of folks training for this? Or maybe I should ask: how are people training for this? I was thinking I'd like to do some long group rides in March/April.
