I encourage any riders to help design permanents and / or populairs, per the rules of RUSA. Anyone designing a course might want to send a preview route to me, since RUSA will send the route to me officially for review and comment prior to RUSA's formal approval. As Eric has already mentioned, the GLR has its hands full planning the brevet series for the year. Volunteers is what makes up this Randonneuring sport. Have a route idea, put it on paper (cue sheets) and submit for others to enjoy. Hope to see you all in Delavan this spring / summer. I'll be reaching out to some of you (who have already contacted me) for volunteering assistance soon. Safe riding!

I would add the Elmhurst Bike Club, Panera Bread ride starts are very close to the train station.

EBC has a lot of rides. Just make sure to read the ride description to make sure the pace matches what you are looking for. There are some slooooow paces. Ray Dal Lago's rides are pretty fast.

I just wanted to follow up with a few thoughts for people in the city looking for training rides.
On saturdays the METRA BNSF line will get you to the western suburbs in time to ride with several clubs, e.g. Downers Grove & Naperville.

Although not accessible by train, the Wheeling Wheelmen offer several 100k rides per month.

If I'm looking for some easy base miles to start the season I'll occasionally take METRA to Aurora and ride the Fox River Trail north to Crystal Lake.

Eric -
No offense taken. I've only done very light reading on creation of routes and such, and all of the care that goes in to it. I am extremely grateful that you have even created the 200K permanent.
Seeing as I am a city dweller, I am sure that any 100K permanent created by me would be absolutely awful, so I am certainly not trying to say it would be an easy feat.
Starting small is on my list. Working up to 75 then 100k morning rides is my plan.
I'd like to start with some shorter group rides too. Riding the LFP doesn't really interest me. Some of the other MUP's out of the city and back is more my style. A Metra sling-shot out or back into the city might be an option.
Jim,
Creation of some populaires is on my list.
I must point out that when you say "we" this includes you and all other rando-oriented cyclists. Anyone can create permanents and populaires. I cannot speak for GLR, but I think GLR already has a lot on their plate in supporting the full series.
I do not intend any offense in my remarks, so I hope none is taken.

I'm honestly surprised that we do not have a populaire in the area, even as a permanent. I wonder if GLR has considered doing one as a pre-cursor to the series.
Hi y'all,
I've got a goal of doing at lest a couple of brevets this year for fun - I figger I'll start with a populaire if I can find one - so I figured it would be a good idea to join this group.
training ride #2 posted.
The upper jockey is supposed to slide back and forth a couple of mm to account for a tiny error in indexing. The VO jockey set I just mentioned gets around this by making the top jockey ultra thin so the chain can actually slide side-to-side. I suppose you could do the same thing to a Shimano bottom jockey by dremeling the teeth a little narrower and shaving a tiny bit off of the width on each side of the wheel at the diameter to give the chain a bit of fudge room on the wheel.
