Randonneuring Defined

Randonneuring: Randonneuring is long-distance unsupported endurance cycling. This style of riding is non-competitive in nature, and self-sufficiency is paramount. When riders participate in randonneuring events, they are part of a long tradition that goes back to the beginning of the sport of cycling in France and Italy. Friendly camaraderie, not competition, is the hallmark of randonneuring.

Some enticing fleche footage of the San Fran Fleche two weeks ago:

Will there be a Chicago team for the Midwest Fleche?

Anyone is interested in participating in this year's Upper Midwest fleche, please make sure to contact me by APril 20th, so that I can help you get registered. We also need an accurate count to make sure we have enough food and beer at the finish.

Yes, thank you Jim! I had to do some driving this weekend after several months & was reminded me how tiring and boring it can get.

thanks Mike
EVERYONE - PLEASE NOTE - 200K and 300K routes will have minor changes.
I just previewed the entire 200K and 300K 2012 courses yesterday.  Expect some minor detours, coming to the GLR Website in the next couple weeks.

Ran into 4 other construction detours.
Took me just under 9 hours to drive these two route and scope the detours AND makes sure street signage matches cue sheets.

I will bringing our GLR route M from Milton into Delavan, back into the equation.  It might be rough road in parts, curb lane looks fine, but alot of it is getting better and as Mike indicated some of it is repaved (not striped yet).  I'll have to keep an eye on it this spring however, in case they decide to to the other parts soon.

The 200K and 300K will be similar to 2013 routes, with the detours updated.
The 400K to Baraboo will be scoped out on May 11.  Look for more on this soon.

See you all soon!

Rode a very small part of Delavan 200 course last saturday. Reconstruction of county M out of Milton is complete and a vast improvement, so last year's detour won't be necessary. New road surface ends at county KK, and then reverts to the old beaten up tarmac until Rock/Walworth county line road, which is newly paved and unlined as of last week (sadly, the course only goes about 3/4 mile on it before the turn onto R&D Townline rd.)

i only did the route from Delavan to Milton and back last weekend... the wind was almost apocalyptic and i could barely stay on the road. i surely hope that by the first ride it's calmer!

i'd been hoping to do the ride from Delavan to Brodhead before the first brevet, but probably won't have the opportunity.

Here is a route along the Fox River trail that I've done more than once. It is largely on trails.

Take UP-NW out to Crystal lake then follow Fox River trail and IPP back to the city. Mileage may vary depending on where you start, but is generally between 60-75 miles.

If you want to go out early on a weekend day, you will have to do it in reverse, since the first train on weekends doesn’t get you to Crystal Lake until 10am. On Sunday it is not until noon.

Also, the IPP is crushed limestone, so it may be less suitable for really skinny tires. I ride it on 700x35c without a problem.

You may want to wait until mid-April or so to give the IPP time to dry out. Springtime conditions can be somewhat soggy.

Lee - good point about EBC. I don't know if they are following that practice. It's a long train ride to Naperville and the weekend METRA schedule is sparse. OK if the purpose is to get to the "country" (or the FVP). However if the purpose is to just get to the suburbs and rideable roads then another option might be to hook up with riders from say Oak Park - I know there are riders that ride from Oak Park out to Oswego and beyond. Or riders could navigate themselves from Oak Park (or other close-in suburbs). The crucial piece is knowing where the "rideable" roads are -and this is true even in the "country".

Eric,

I was reluctant to mention the Elmhurst Bike Club because I've heard that they only allow guests on one or two rides before insisting that they join. Downers Grove, Naperville, and the Wheeling Wheelmen are more receptive to guests.

It just occurred to me that riders taking the train out of the city to Aurora to ride the Fox River Trail could return to the city via either Elgin or Crystal Lake - both have stations that are a few blocks from the trail.

Of note is that the Folks on Spokes club rides out of Matteson on Sunday morning once the weather warms up. It's pretty easy to get to by the Metra Electric.

I try and keep the rides updated on our meetup group: http://www.meetup.com/folksonspokes/
