She is asking for my help to have a ghost bike built for her husband.
She reached out to Elizabeth to request a ghost bike and hasn't heard back yet. I realize she must be quite busy, could someone let me know what the best way is to start the process so that Lindy can have a memorial ghost bike set up for her husband? Much appreciated.
Hi Ghost Bike Group & Chainlinkers,

On Thursday June 26 2014, my cousin Ronayne Thomas was riding his bike across CTA train tracks and was struck and killed by a train. We are having a ghost bike memorial installed in his honor on Sunday August 10 at Noon. We are meeting by the Kedzie Brown Line station (4648 N. Kedzie Ave.). The event is open to the public and we are looking forward to celebrating Ronayne's love for cycling and life with you all.

As many of you may know, at-grade rail crossings can be dangerous for all road users. Both road users and the CTA can do things to improve the safety of these crossings. This tragic incident has sparked dialogue about safety improvements, and we hope at some point to provide an update about any changes at these crossings.

Thanks,

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if permission is needed to do a little maintenance/upkeep on an already existing Ghost Bike. I don't want to change anything about it, just clean around it, add a new coat of paint, maybe add some flowers. Thanks for the assistance.

CHICAGO — A cyclist who died after being hit by a van Friday night was a former Marine and aspiring chef, his family said.

Alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, in which a driver traveling west in a van in the 2500 block of West Ogden Street hit the 28-year-old man on his bike at 11:50 p.m., said Officer Janel Sedevic, a police spokeswoman.

The cyclist was identified as Hector Avalos, 28, of the 1800 block of West Cermak Road, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:38 a.m. Saturday, according to the medical examiner.

The driver was arrested and charges were pending Saturday, Sedevic said.

Avalos' mother, Ingrid Cossio, said her son was riding home from work when he was struck. She said he rode his bike everywhere.

She said her son was a former Marine who had been studying to become a chef. She said he recently started a job as a cook at River North restaurant El Hefe.

Cossio said she visited her son last week, and spent a day with him, looking at his house and discussing his new job. She remembered asking for a hug before she left, and her son telling her, "I love you, Mom."

She said she was devastated when police called around 11 a.m. to tell her of her son's death.

"I still can't believe my son is dead," she said.

Hector Avalos started working as a cook at El Hefe in May, said the restaurant's head chef, Jesus Vargas. He said Avalos was a hard worker and always willing to help.

Vargas said Avalos was an avid cyclist who "loved riding his bike."

"He'd always ride the bike no matter what," Vargas said.

Friday night, Vargas said Avalos considered taking the "L" home, but opted to ride.

"Last night, he was saying he really didn't want to ride his bike. He wanted to take the train," Vargas said. "He kind of thought about it for a minute, and then he decided to take his bike."

A 56-year-old Naperville woman riding a bicycle died after she was struck by a pickup truck Wednesday morning at the intersection of Diehl Road and Freedom Drive in Naperville, police said.

Shwuwei Yeh was attempting to cross Diehl Road about 7:25 a.m. when she was hit by a gray 2006 Nissan Titan driven by a 35-year-old man, Naperville police said Thursday.

A Naperville Fire Department ambulance transported Yeh in very serious condition to Edward Hospital where she died of her injuries, police said.

The name of driver of the vehicle was not released.

"The investigation still is ongoing and as of now, charges have not been filed," said Sgt. Louis Cammiso of the Naperville Police Department.

According to police, an initial investigation showed the Nissan was traveling east on Diehl Road and the bicyclist was trying to cross Diehl heading north at the east side of the intersection.

"There were possibly several different factors involved, but it's a big, spread out intersection and obviously very busy," said Cammiso. "It's always very unfortunate when there's an accident involving a motor vehicle and a bicycle."

The intersection of Diehl Road and Freedom Drive has two lanes in each direction and a dual turn lane to accommodate high volumes of traffic from Interstate 88 and numerous businesses near the corner.

A traffic accident reconstruction unit is studying the crash and police are asking anyone with additional information to contact Commander Ken Parcel at 630-305-5285 or parcelk@naperville.il.us.
