Two ideas:
1. Take the train to Galesburg, then hop on the MRT take that to Galena, and pick up the GIT from there back to Chicago. Probably a good 7-10 days, depending on distance.
2. Take Amtrak in the direction of St. Louis. Get off somewhere along the way and ride back to Chicago using the the Route 66 trail

I have some (5O$) amtrak credit. Any good locations to start from and ride back?

Me and the Brittany are going to ride to Starved Rock State Park for a few days sometime between March 6-13 (her spring break). It would be great to have some people join us. We will be camping this trip.

I'm also down for an overnighter or two this spring/summer. I'm also down for a longer trip roughly a week or two sometime this summer. Last year I did the UP of Michigan for a week and had a blast. Any suggestions?

Sounds like there is certainly interest for a spring overnighter, and maybe more. I just bought a bunch of Ortlieb bags from Kozy (they have a great deal on them right now) and I intend to get some use out of them this year!

I'm also up for some overnighters this spring. AND on these overnighters I may try to convince some of you to go on something a little longer :)

My friends and I are attempting to plan a few overnighters for the upcoming season. When the plans become more solid I'll throw it up here and invite people to come along.

I'm in for an overnighter. The Zion ride is nice. Especially if you take the Des Plaines River Trail up. I did that last spring.

I definitely want to do the Ferry across to Michigan thing. We'd probably need at least 4 days for that. I'm sure we could find additional people for that. Do you think it will be warm enough in April?

Maybe in March we could get a group and do a stay in a rental cabin or hotel somewhere. Maybe Indiana Dunes? We could also slingshot the with the Metra and check out near Rock Cut State Park.

Me too. I would do the ride to IL Beach State Park in Zion. It's a good one night trip.

Hey Jami, how are the new digs?

I've thought about biking up to Wisconsin and taking the ferry over to Michigan. But I wouldn't want to do that too early in the season, it will still be chilly up north. Plus it sounds like a multi-night excursion, most likely, which I'd be up for, not sure about anyone else. I just picked up some Ortlieb bags, so I'm definitely itching to go! :)
