The Chainlink

I noticed this in a zombie movie, a couple of people were fleeing and a fee got taken down and I thought to myself "They would have better luck if they had a couple bikes".

Being a mild zombie fan I realized that in the various media I have consumed no one ever has a bike.  Sure it cuts down on the drama when people can just ride away at a few more MPH than some shambling dead person but when the day of the dead comes if you have your ride ready you'll be in better shape.

I know it's not the same, but I'm sooo intrigued by the disaster relief trials in Portland...  Chicago needs this.  Maybe a Zombie Apocalypse version?

Was it Dr Who?

I remember seeing a movie where people were spending all of their time and income sitting trapped in cars that could barely move to go anywhere because everyone else was doing the same thing. And destroying the earth and their own bodies in the process. I thought the same thing - "if only there were bikes, the solution to these people's problems would be obvious!"

Dr Who? No, it was the WGN traffic report during the Ohio Street bridge demolition.

I watched a few episodes of that show Revolution where electricity stops working (ugh, stupid I know).  They ride horses to get around, which is sustainable so they get credit for that.  But there are no bikes or roller skates or skateboards.

I saw that scene in World War Z and it was not a squeaky chain that alerted the zombies, it was a cell phone that rang. They were trying to ride to an airplane instead of a car because the car's engine would attract their attention.

That actually happened to me once.

I recommend the Salsa Fargo for apocalyptic situations, but if anybody else has a good suggestion you'd be doing us all a favor by putting it down.

Single speed direct drive 'fixies' are out since you want to have quick acceleration, the initial 'get away' being critical. Top speed really isn't that important - you just need to outpace the dead who are shambling along at 2-4 mph.

A mountain bike is probably a good idea, roads are going to go to crap soon enough and it'll more more trail riding or rough road riding than anything.  Ten speeds are probably out since they do bad in muddy ruts and the like. Given choices I'd opt for a durable 3 speed coaster break with a good 'head up' view of the landscape.  Also break pads are going to be a real pain to find/replace. Solid tires would be better, sure a rough ride but no one needs to be getting flats. 26 inch wheels is a good idea as they are plentiful.

And an AK-47

'LOLLAPALLOZA ZOMBIE BITER' ARRESTED. No bicycle was found nearby.

A couple seconds of bikes, not much though.
