I just got a message from a relative with a photo attached of a bike laying on the ground with a messenger bag and its contents strewn in front of a u-haul truck. She keeps telling me to stop cycling, because it's so dangerous. Earlier this year, she also told me a story about an acquaintance who is doing through rehab a year after their cycling accident. I know she means well, but it's annoying. If I told someone to stop driving after they had a car accident, they would look at me like I was crazy.
BTW, I tried searching for a similar thread as I think this is a pretty common topic.

You need protection from yourself.
Everything is dangerous! Even walking. Just last year, someone died walking to their bus stop. I don't remember the story exactly, but the cab driver jumped the curb and hit him. Also that statistic about accidents 25 miles from home is a total joke. Aren't most trips 10 miles or less? I know h' was being facetious, but still!
Perhaps uncharitably, I can't help but wonder whether it is drivers like her that add what danger does exists in cycling.
Speaking of which, why don't people look at these accidents and think "wow I need to be more aware of cyclists"? Instead they just say "I knew cycling was dangerous! Cyclists have a death wish."

There seems to be a common thread running through things being dangerous. In particular: because a car is likely to kill you.
The obvious solution is to eliminate all things that aren't cars. For your health!
