What an amazing (and dangerous) weekend of racing for the road races for women and men. I am hooked!

She's Okay. Dutch Cyclist - Annemiek van Vleuten. Dangerous route.

"The Royal Dutch Cycling Federation tweeted that van Vleuten suffered a 'heavy concussion and three small fractures in her lumbar spine.'"
- Yahoo

It could have been much worse but I don't think she's "ok". Hopefully she will make a full recovery.

When I posted, I watched the race and was excited about Mara Abbott who held first place until the end. It was a "beautiful ride"

I doubt that she's really "okay."  I suspect it will be a long recovery.

USA Mara Abbott caught in final sprint finishes fourth out of a medal. (0:55 video)

I just hope there are no further casualties.  I saw a clip of one guy who broke both collarbones.  Man.

The Olympic course has been widely criticized as dangerous.

Vincenzo Nibali- Italy- broken collarbone

Sergio Henao- Columbia- fractured pelvis

Richie Porte- Australia- broken scapula

Bad news.

Jim, The person you saw, Nibali won TdF a few years ago. He is usually excellent (one of the best) at descents. It must have been really sketchy for Niboli to have crashed out like that.

http://indianexpress.com/sports/rio-2016-olympics/italian-vincenzo-...

"Italian cyclist Vincenzo Nibali broke both collarbones after crashing on a high-speed descent near the end of the Olympic men’s road race on Saturday, a team official said.

Nibali attacked late in the race, leading a three-man breakaway on a climb. He tried to ride away from Colombia’s Sergio Henao and Poland’s Rafal Majka before he and Henao lost control on a descent so fast that the motorcycle carrying a television cameraman struggled to keep up."  (emphasis added)

I was cheering for Rafal Majka right there.

I came in after the crashes and was cheering for Majka at the end, not knowing what had happened.
