The Chainlink

Has anyone posted yet about the Lake Shore Path? It doesn't seem to be kept as clear as in years past. For at least a week, the part that runs from Oak Street Beach to Navy Pier has been covered with a thick sheet of ice. I don't seem to recall any other time in recent history that this trail was rendered so impassible for so long. Anyone know what's going on?

Not hard to figure out why nobody has posted about it.

Wind direction and speed have a major impact on how much ice we have along the lakefront.  Seems like we've had a fair number of days when we've had wind out of the north, which builds up large waves that break over the path at Oak St.  If we have strong wind out of the northeast, then Fullerton and Oak St. get hit bad.  Not much the park district can do about that - see the thread Cameron mentioned.

I posted in the I Rode Today thread...http://www.thechainlink.org/forum/topics/i-rode-today-did-you?page=...  I had asked the other day about the path and a few had posted that things looked good. The path is fine except for the areas you described where the path really comes very close to  the lake.  It was closed at Fullerton and I figured that it would be a mess from there all the way to at least Navy Pier so I bailed and took city streets from there and didn't bother with the path.  it was fine from Fullerton all the way north to Ardmore. I don't know about how it was farther south.  Remember that we had a warning for severe lake effect snow on Friday evening. it turned out to be much less than anticipated. However, the conditions for lake effect snow made it ripe for washing lake water, ice etc over the path near the beaches. That was no big surprise.

Tonight between North and Michigan there was one stretch to walk and a few to be careful, especially close to the undperpass where it was packed snow. It was clear closer to the lake (down the step toward the water).

The ramps to the LSD underpass at Michigan Ave were covered with packed snow. I walked one this morning but rode both ramps, with care, tonight.

The dirt bypass at Fullerton was dry.

Going south (Monroe Harbor to Hyde Park), the LFP is essentially clear, dry-ish, and well salted.  Ice is not an issue today.

As a reminder, ATA maintains a Twitter feed about the Lake Front Path ( @activetransLFT ) , and you can search for #ChiLFT to get pretty good updates of LFP conditions.
