The Chainlink

After my first bike was stolen I thought I'd never be the victim of Chicago bike thieves again. Unfortunately they are tenacious.

Sometime last night my Univega Viva Sport single speed was stolen from inside the security fence at my apartment complex in Logan Square (kimball and armitage). They managed to get inside the fence and compromise my Kryptonite heavy chain lock. I've already reported it through the Chicago bike registry and I'm waiting on a call back from CPD.

It is a gold single speed bike (about a 55-60cm frame). White griptape on bullhorns and white brake cable covers. Silver metal pedals. Both wheels had reflectors as well as front and back reflectors on the frame and an led light on the seatpost. On either side of the head tube all of the paint is scratched off from where my lock used to hang.

It also has the univega rainbow logo on the seat tube.

I know there is about a .001% chance I'll ever see it again, especially since I hadn't registered it before, but if anyone could keep an eye out for it I would greatly appreciate it. It has been my baby for going on 5 years and my heart hurts much more than my wallet at this point. It was a good deal when I bought it, but I recently spent about $350-400 improving it and replacing parts.

Here is a picture of it before I converted it to a single speed and added the white bullhorns.

You will probably not get a call back-- that system is fracked.  Call 311 and try again-- it gets easier later at night.

You had a good lock. But even with the best locks a thief can get through with a good angle grinder in 5-10minutes.  I have had good luck with making my bike look as ugly as possible & use a Kryptonite NYC U-lock & a chain. Maybe try that 42nd & Ashland Swap flea market. I heard others on here recovered their stolen bikes.

I guess I put too much confidence in my parking spot and the strength of my chain. There were 3 other bikes locked up near mine, all with u-locks, that were left untouched.

Thanks for the tip on the flea market. I'll check down there this weekend and try to find my bike.
