The State Street bridge over the Chicago River will close for 10 days beginning Wednesday for construction on the Chicago Riverwalk. The bridge will close to all traffic from 6 a.m. Wednesday through the afternoon of Saturday, Aug. 23, according to the Chicago Department of Transportation. During the closure, all northbound vehicles — including CTA buses — will be detoured west to LaSalle via Wacker, and back east to State via Illinois, according to the statement. Southbound vehicles will detour west to Clark via Grand, and back to State via Wacker. Bikes will be detoured west to cross the river on the two-way bike lanes on Dearborn, according to the statement. The riverwalk construction project will create a continuous pedestrian path along the south bank of the river from State to Lake streets.

Thanks for the info - I use State bridge daily to get to work. Coming from the south, LSD to Riverwalk, Wabash bridge is a good alternative to that area of the Loop/River North
I'll second that. I think that Wabash is an excellent alternate route.

If we're lucky maybe the construction is done and the bridge is down again. Has anyone passed that way today to see if that is the case?
Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

I will know tonight when I go home, but I think I read something last week saying it would be delayed because of the flooding last Thursday.
Peeked out the office window - it is down again.
*sigh* I was hoping someone would have news before I leave the office at 5:00. I still have limited mobility due to my ankle fracture, and this bridge closure has really been messing with the reliability of the one bus route that gives me a direct connection to my train.
That WAS some serious flooding last Thursday. I hope that today's weather doesn't delay things further, if the bridge is still closed to traffic.

As of this evening's rush hour, looks like the bridge was still closed to traffic.
State Street Construction Starts Next Week
Commuters brace yourself. You might want to avoid State Street downtown next month. A $650,000 State Street resurfacing project from Van Buren Street to Wacker Drive will begin next week.

I'll be seeing and hearing it right outside the office windows - oh joy! It's gonna suck for a while, but those of you who have ridden State through the Loop anytime recently know how much the work is needing. Will grin and bear it and look forward to having decent pavement again soon.
I was wondering when someone in the media would pick up on the riverwalk construction/ flooding angle. Hope we have LESS rain in the next few days than the forecast might suggest.
