<p>Here's another interesting (to me) article, this time in Deadspin. Again, it focuses on NYC, but I think the parallels with Chicago are pretty strong.</p>

<p>A few particular points I thought worth highlighting:</p>

<li>Similarly, distribution of cycling fatalities isn't uniform, being concentrated in parts of NYC with less infrastructure. Quoting: <em>“[F]rankly, the lack of protected bike lanes in East New York sends the message that our Mayor is not willing to invest equally in already disenfranchised neighborhoods of color,” Transportation Alternatives Interim Co-Executive Director Marco Conner <a href="https://nyc.streetsblog.org/2019/06/27/brooklyn-cyclist-killed-by-driver-13th-death-in-a-bloody-year/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said in a statement</a>.</em></li>
<li>Street design is only one part of the solution. Quoting from the article:<em>“You end up with new bike lanes pretty quickly after these horrible fatalities,” [Aaron] Naparstek said. “It’s almost like the best way to get a new piece of bike infrastructure in a big city right now is to have someone killed, which seems like the wrong way to design your bike infrastructure, just waiting for fatalities.” He continued, “Street design is super important, but it’s bullet-proofing.” Focusing only on street design, “is like telling kids to wear bulletproof backpacks to school instead of making sure there are fewer guns on the street.”</em></li>
<li>Uber, Lyft and cell phones have dramatically increased congestion and driver distraction.</li>
<li>Bike infrastructure can be a proxy for complaints about other aspects of a city's growth which are out of control of its citizens. Again, quoting from the article: <em>“Fundamentally, it’s a fear of change,” Naparstek said of anti-bike sentiment. “There’s been a lot of change in cities, and when the new condo comes in or your favorite restaurant goes out of business and is replaced by some fancy new restaurant, you don’t really get any say in that at all. Every time a bike lane goes in, there’s a public process, and that’s a flashpoint where people can express all kinds of concerns about the way their city is changing. The bike lane becomes a symbol for all of the things that are changing in this neighborhood that I didn’t have a say in, that I don’t like, that aren’t serving me, and many of those complaints are legitimate. Usually, the complaints about the bike lane, in my view, are not.”</em></li>
<li>Obstruction of bike lanes frequently forces cyclists into traffic. I see this frequently just putting around the Loop. Over time I think drivers expect bike riders to be in the bike lanes. They aren't prepared for these obstructions and the evasive maneuvers bike riders need to take.</li>
<li>Consequences for killing or seriously injuring cyclists are minimal.</li>

<p>Of note, on-line retail and the associated UPS, Amazon and Fed-Ex delivery trucks significantly reduce car traffic. Just 150 packages spread across 3 truck routes can eliminate more than 300 car ride legs back and forth from home to stores, between stores, and back home. The trucks are still on the road, and show up at various points to make deliveries as well, but they go along way to reducing car traffic as society and transportation continues to evolve. </p>
<p>Of note, on-line retail and the associated UPS, Amazon and Fed-Ex delivery trucks significantly reduce car traffic. Just 150 packages spread across 3 truck routes can eliminate more than 300 car ride legs back and forth from home to stores, between stores, and back home.
