Solutions for 700C conversion - this is different, I promise.

Bracing for the opinion poll to slam my ideas - but I know these are pretty solid, as ideas go.  I put a longer bolt and V-brake hardware on Weinmann 4-dot brake holders and added 15mm in back of the front center pull so I didn't have to remove the canti bosses for my 700C conversion. For the purists out there - I can get replacement canti studs for the front brake if the mood strikes to, for some reason (I can't imagine why), go back to 27" wheels.  These are Weinmann 610 brakes, by the way, very similar to Dia-Compe 610.

Without the V-brake hardware, I'd have to swap out the set to longer reach center pull brakes since the rear pads wouldn't be low enough. 

I also found that Mafac Racer center pulls would be a better option if I could control the toe-in without bending the brake arms.  If the angle could be adjusted like most cantilevers, using those would be a no brainer.  Perhaps the Mafac Tiger would be better?

Paul Components compares their "Racer" to the Mafac Racer, but it looks more like a Weinmann 610 to me, and they put on the V-Brake hardware just like I did.  So I already have a Paul "Racer" brake set, even though the Mafac Racer is in some ways better designed.

However, the real problem is that I can't seem to find a modern brake pad holder with a 42mm length.  Ideas, anyone?

I have done a 27-700c conversion using MTB cantos that I salvaged from an early 1990s beater bike that someone left at my house.  They have a lot of adjustment and seemed to work just fine. I can double check on the brakes, which were Shimano of some make/model, and the conversion bike was a Miyata 210 mixte.  But it all worked out after much trial and error with other cantis and allowed me to avoid the issue you are trying to avoid (the canti studs interfering with the 610s, which are nice brakes, btw).

I think if you look close enough at this you'll find that canti and lp aren't possible. Thanks, though.

It really looks like the Mafac Racer brakes are the best option with the most pads to choose from including even modern pads which fit right into the mounts.  Mafac brings the brake pad much further forward, thereby avoiding the canti bosses.  The Paul "Racer" brakes would not do that. In other words I can finish my project with confidence without Paul "Racer" brakes or any ridiculously expensive "modern" variation.

I also found the Mafac that I test fit on the front was bent out of shape and there appears to be some other problems with it.  I can get another straighter front brake to replace it and then I'll be set.

i had a similar situation with my Univerga -basically it's a Miyata 1000. Was able to find a pair of older tektro cantis that had enough adjustment to reach 700C and they work beautifully. i don't recall the model number- i'm pretty sure it's out of production, but i'll post a pic later. i found mine on eBay, and you may, too.

I tried a pair of Shimano CX 70 brakes too. No luck. If I get cantilevers again I'll have the studs lowered and the frame painted. But I'd like to see the Tektro brakes you're talking about.

Please excuse the crappy quality, but these are the Tektros that worked for me. Don't know the model number, and can't find a reference- probably out of production, so if anyone can ID them for me, i'd appreciate it. i believe these are ATB brakes due to the beefiness of the arms and they're super adjustable. Sorry they are a bit manky. The bike's apart for overhaul, so i can't show them installed. If she's reassembled any time soon, i can send along better pix.

These are great. The design is very similar to Paul linear pull brakes. The problem is the front since the studs on my bike are so close to the rim. Mafac wins this round, unless a wager is in play... ;-)

Those are  Tektro 872 cantilevers, or Tektro "Tri Align".  I'd like the opportunity to put them on when the bike is finally assembled.  This was a good head's up, but I still doubt they'll work.

Dia Compe clone of Mafac from 1986.....NGC450B is a hot seller and quite rare.  But it still wouldn't fit my project as well as Mafac!
