Riding to “downtown” Deerfield is challenging but far from impossible.
Try this route; it’s about 4 miles and I think you will find it is very reasonable. The short sections that are on sidewalk are in areas where there is very little foot traffic and just a few driveway crossings, ride at a safe speed on them and you will enjoy this ride.
Start out in Highland Park using Laurel (1 block south of Central), take it west until just before it ends at Central where you can turn left onto the sidewalk on the south side of Central. Ride on the sidewalk about a block or so and then turn left onto Frederickson, go about 2 blocks on Frederickson where it dead ends at a foot bridge (look to your right for the path leading to the bridge at the end of the road) that crosses 41, use the bridge (walk the bridge the first time). The foot bridge will take you to the intersection of Old Skokie and Old Deerfield. Take Old Deerfield southwest about ¼ mile and turn right onto Richfield for 1 block and then cross Deerfield turning left onto the Deerfield road sidewalk for about a ½ mile, then turn right (north) at Lions, where you will go through Deer Spring Park, then turn left onto Margate for 2-3 blocks and then right onto Oxford for 1 block and then left onto Westgate for a few blocks until you get to route 43, cross 43 and turn left onto the sidewalk on the west side of 43, use the sidewalk for a block or so until you get to Jewett Park where you can make your way through the park on paved trails, stay left while you are in the park and look for a skate boarding area, just past the skate board area turn left onto a very short path up then right into a parking lot behind the police station and residences ride about a block through the lots to the Metra station. hmmm...i always think I have…tag:thechainlink.org,2009-09-26:2211490:Comment:1227262009-09-26T21:39:33.753ZJulie Aberman (Hochstadter)https://thechainlink.org/profile/JulieHochstadter
hmmm...i always think I have to go to lake and western which seems MUCH farther from my house than the 2 miles or so (maybe more) from the HP to Deerfiled metra stops. Usually a family member drives me or I bike, but I REALLY don't like riding on that street, especially at night. I just like to have options, even a cab once in a while is fine now that I'm carfree.
