I ruined one of my rims the other night trying to get a stubborn tire off (was clearly ready to fail... maybe a good thing) and I think it's time to add a fresh wheelset to the collection.

I want something bombproof and not stupid-heavy...  90s ATB technology is working blissfully well for me and not really looking to change that, so it's rim braking for me.

I wasn't necessarily looking to buy from Nashbar, but just by example-- this particular wheelset seems to be available from a lot of different sources:

Just wondering what people who deal with this stuff regularly think about these (and also will I be able to transfer over an 8-speed cassette from a Parallax hub without any problem?

Thanks!

I have almost 20K miles on the Rhyno Lites on my commuter / tourer and theyve done a good job for me.  Deore should accept any modern Shimano Hyperglide 8/9 speed cassette.  Expect to retension and true them soon (perhaps out of the box) because Im sure they are machine built but I think its a very good value.

The CR-18 and Rhyno-lite are probably the best value in great rims out there right now and you can;t go wrong with them or the Deore hubs.

If you do purchase online I highly recommend hand finishing, or having a shop hand finish, the wheels to ensure a long life.  A good touch up on a machine built wheel will make a huge difference.

Yes there is.

If the wheel gets ridden improperly tensioned it puts extra stress on some, or all, of the spokes which can lead to future problems.  If it is bad enough it will also put a bow in the rim which will lead to a wheel that can never be properly tensioned and trued.
