Why doesn't anyone else say "I told you so" when someone gets in a car crash? And if you do, you'll be seen as being crazy or insensitive. It's a double standard.

Driving a car is the norm in the US, and riding a bike for transportation is seen as a fringe activity for entitled yuppies and hipsters (although recent …

The same reaction is seen with essentially any so-called "fringe activity" that goes against the status quo.

Robert Underwood said:

Actually the only people whove said things to discourage me from cycling I don't really know to well or care about too much. My family and friends are basically supportive. People just don't understand how much better it is to bike than drive especially when you have to sit at a desk for 8 hours everyday, why the heck would you want to sit in a car for another 2 hours, when you could be outside with the wind in your hair/helmet... enjoying the scenery and feeling healthier. Hope your arm gets better and you don't get injured anymore!!

It's not a sexist thing. It's an ignorance thing. By the way I invested in some ice tires (with metal studs) & haven't fallen, or even slipped since. When these people talk/ask about the dangers of winter on a bike I mention the tires. They say things like, "that's awesome" & "you're hardcore". On the inside I roll my eyes. On the outside I flex my muscles & say, "tough as nails!". Just goes to show in today's society (male or female) gadgets make you cooler.

My oldest is currently using "did you see us? Then we're good" all while making the 'I'm watching you' sign with her fingers. The baby just yells "hey - hippos can fly too!" I don't understand why he says this - the drivers are REALLY confused every time. Did I mention they are little? 1.
Society in general tends to move to protect itself when the status quo is threatened. Bicycle advocacy is essentially a fringe activity and the typical auto-driving matrix-dweller definitely feels threatened by our very existence. They don't want to take the red pill. They want, instead, to shove the blue pill down your throat and go back to their nice warm comfortable car idling in the parking lot expressway.

So this type of reaction is normal and we all get it to a certain extent. But maybe women get it more as men are more likely to be free-spirits and are allowed more leway to thumb their nose at society's norms -especially younger men without families/wives/blah-blah-blah and can be reckless. Women get the full force of society policing itself against any scary paradigm shifts.

The nail that sticks up gets hammered down. If we want to be sticking-up nails instead of getting smoothed over by our auto-driving society we are going to need to expect a few hammer-blows from Mrs. Grundy.

"The Matrix is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy. But when you’re inside, you look around, what do you see? Businessmen, teachers, lawyers, carpenters. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that system and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it."
