Went to Target to look for something to put under the bikes we keep in our apartment to catch, soak up, or otherwise contain the dirty slush that gloms onto bikes in a Chicago winter. Came out with a "hot yoga" mat. It has a plastic side (I assume to keep it from sliding around the sweaty yoga studio floor) and is made of an absorbant, towel-like material. Best of all, it is machine washable and on clearance now!
What are some of your apartment floor saving solutions?

I use two boot trays at home and in the office.  Works just fine for catching the slush melting off of my bike.

Tyvek by the yard.
In the past, I had a coupla places where I could hang bikes vertically in a closet. I got a plastic shower pan from the hardware store to set under them. That worked out pretty well.

I also tried one of those long plastic hallway/stair carpet protectors with the little nubs on one side. Which only kind of worked, because water would run off of it if there was too much melt.
