First time plan to ride the long bike route

I'm form chicago and I'll just take my bike on am track to San Francisco. And I'll start from there to new Orleans is the final. Well just need advise and suggestions for my first time and alone bike ride

What about tools and what ever stuff supply support for the whole trips? Any body have a tips what to bring along ?
