The Southside Ride for Chicago Critical Mass

This Critical Mass route proposal is a 14-mile tour of some of Chicago's African-American cultural & historical landmarks. Highlights along the route will include the site of the Chess Records studios, the Bronzeville Victory Monument, Ida B. Wells' home, the Harold Washington Cultural Center, the DuSable Museum, the Obamas' house and much more. The ride will end at the new 31st Street marina and beach.

A special thanks to the lovely Eboni Senai, a true gem in our city. Her work as the Founder of Red Bike & Green - Chicago is energizing bicycling culture in the African American community of Chicago. Also want to share a huge thanks with John Greenfield, Willow Naeco, and Steven Lane for their early, active, and consistent support of this effort.

We will meet up at 5:30pm on Friday, August 31st at the Picasso statue at Daley Plaza. Please join us for a beautiful ride through parts of the Southside of Chicago!

...how about a post-ride afterparty?

h' - figured as much. had you already read the articles? and yeah, connect with me on Friday and help me pull off that reception line. wanna meet all 2000+ riders. Daley or 31st? you decide! hahahaha...

Thanks for the links-- think I've seen that site before.

Are you thinking of something like a reception line so you can meet everyone?

Will we do that at Daley or at 31st street?

hey h' - thanks for the question. no formal presentation planned. eboni (founder, red bike & green - chicago) and i (founder, the pioneers) worked together to create a list of landmarks and points of interest for the ride. john greenfield created the map. and willow inserted the map and list of landmarks in the derailleur magazine. here are a couple articles john wrote about our respective orgs. trust this helps. let me know if you have more questions. and look forward to meeting you on friday!

So, how do we hear more about these bike clubs? What is their role in the "presentation" of Friday's ride?

Peace Yall -If you have not seen the map or points of interest yet, check out the attachments!

After CCM ends at 31st, some will regroup and head for the FBC (FullMoon/Fracking Bike Club) ride which leaves Gannon's (4264 N Lincoln) maybe after 10pm.  I expect to take LFT N, then Lincoln NW. Text "where" to u@massup.us to find me.

(Not to detract from the DJ party at 2236 S Marshall)

I'm definitely promoting the post ride to the PDJC jam where I'll be spinning some house and bicycle reggae as well!

I'll be riding North on the LFT after the Mass as well. Perhaps everyone heading north should meet somewhere so we can group ride up the lake front?

The beach is north of the new harbor, and I think there is some sort of facility on the beach right next to the wall or walkway between the beach and the harbor.  Maybe that would be a good place for northbound folks to meet?

Agreed, great route idea ... hope to see the whole Mass head south!

Sounds good to me.

Thanks again to Steven for hosting The Derailleur Assembly Party and to everyone who helped last night! It was nice seeing some real old-timers (I am not one of them) and new faces.

There will be 750 copies of The Derailleur in bundles of 30 at the base of the Picasso ~5 p.m. Please take a bundle (or more) and pass them out!

There is a map on the back of this issue which makes it easier to pass out. "Want a map? Want a Derailleur?" This issue has inserts, so make sure the inserts don't fall out when you hand a copy to someone.

The Derailleur is FREE. People wearing button aprons can accept donations to help offset the costs associated with making the zine. (See my expenses here.)  Leave the rubberbands/extra zines at the base of the Picasso when the Mass starts to leave...or take some copies to your favorite bike shops.

Please please please help pass out The Derailleur. I cannot pass them all out on my own.

Thanks!
