Buffered Bike Lanes Coming To South Shore’s 71st Street

The improvements are part of a year-long project to beautify 71st Street in South Shore and make it safer for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

SOUTH SHORE — The city is retooling a short stretch along with one of South Shore’s main commercial strips with a smoother surface, bike lanes, and other features, realizing upgrades to the street 15 years in the making.

The 71st Street streetscape project, which launched in 2014 based on outlines from a 2006 master plan, has entered its latest phase: resurfacing 71st from Cottage Grove Avenue to South Shore Drive.

City crews also will improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety from Jeffery Boulevard to South Shore Drive, creating buffered bike lanes that connect to the Lakefront Trail and installing accessible ramps at the Metra tracks running through the street’s median.
