Best Route to the Western Burbs from Chicago

I'm wondering if anyone has done the ride from the city straight west to the burbs (in the general direction of Downers Grove). Or vice versa- has rode into the city from this direction.

Any recommended routes? I'm looking to find a pretty efficient path, avoid shady & suspicious neighborhoods, and stay on fairly safe roads in regards to traffic & road conditions as I make my way out of the city. Is there a standard route that most cyclists stick to? Or is it different for everyone that does it?
