<p>That's true, but if you like rough trails, continue North past Devon on the unofficial single track style trail. You can go up to Pratt, Touhy, Howard, Oakton, Dempster, etc. Only good for Mountain, hybrid, or XC bikes though. Cook County Forest Preserve is a great alternative to the Lake for scenery, and way less crowded. Take Lawrence west then Elston North - both have good bike lanes and aren't very busy in those stretches.<br />

And if you ever need to get downtown, especially if you commute to work, Elston can't be beat in terms of wide bike lanes, little traffic, and no pedestrians. It may not have much to look at, but it is quick and pretty safe (except for the Armitage/Ashland intersection).
